Instead of removing the wood, why not just add a bag of Seachem Purigen to the tank?
It will remove the colouration of the tannins in no time, without taking out any of the goodness of the tannin.

I'm kinda worried that it has some bad stuff in it. I want to rather let it sit in water for a couple weeks just to be sure. then i might chuck it back in.

My wood releases tannins after almost a year, albeit slowly

And its not harmfull? So i can just combat it with pwc's then? And is it advisable to add during cycling? I would think it could introduce unnecessary factors?

Tannins reduce PH slightly and apparently have anti fungal properties. If anything it will give more living space for the bacteria :)

You will often hear of fish that live in a "black water" environment.
All that means is that they live in water that has a high tannin content.
Many of the fish from South America spend at least part of the time in that type of environment.
At times some of the rivers become so dark it appears the fish are swimming in a strong tea solution.

The only reason we want to remove the tannin discolouration from the tank, is to enable us to see the fish better that we have introduced to the tank.
The tannin is beneficial in most cases.

If the wood is not Tambotie, or other similar oily wood, and is a typical hard wood, it should be ok for use in your tank.

If you don't want the dark colouration in the tank, simply pop a bag of Seachem Purigen in the filter, and let that remove the colouration from the tank, without doing anything else.
It has been designed to remove organic compounds from the water.

Get it dried out a bit, and post a pic.
Someone should be able to ID it.
A clear shot of the wood underwater could also work.

Where did you get the wood?
The most common wood available in LFS is Mopani.

It has been lying in my mother in law's garden for years and years. I have other pieces that are dry, will try post them all. She has never been much of a gardener and their garden looks more like a piece of veld lol. so i highly doubt theres pesticides etc on them.

Looking back at this thread I realize what a long way Ive come in mere months.

Still doing my daily duty in trying to convince the husband to get a bigger tank, but the nano thing is certainly growing on me and I thing ferdie's perfect 10 looks like just the thing... however I think husband is waiting for my birthday to say yay on the new tank so that's still far off.

Here's what my 15liter nano looks like at the moment:

Now, if someone can tell me what to do with my drunken pump to make it more pleasing to the eye that would just make my day. A sump is absolutely out of the question as my counter space is very limited.

Your tank looks very good. Well done. If you can move the pump to the right hand back corner it will be covered by the plant in the pot.

What is the pumps function? Is it running filtration? I'd put it at the back

    Looks nice and green :)

@Pierré Schoonraad , wouldnt a small sponge filter do the job in this tank?If so, she would eliminate the pump and the thick white pipe...

It would yeah. I even used a similar pump running into a sponge lol, just took out the plastic parts from the filter and ran a pipe in. Worked alright

For a tank of that size, a BOYU sponge filter with airpump could actually work.

@Ane your tank is looking very good.

Something like that is what i had in mind
Then the pump is outside and the sponge can be easily concealed with plants

Yes, that's the general idea. Besides, looks like only shrimp in it so it's perfect for that purpose
