Hi. I’m not sure if this is the correct forum to post this thread on. But I need to collect a small koi this weekend otherwise they have to kill it as they’re destroying the pond. I just want to know how long would a tank need to cycle for with established media? I have 2 large canisters on my 3ft and planning to move one of them to the 4ft for the koi just to quarantine it before putting him in the pond at my boyfriends house with his koi. Will the tank be able to support a 10cm koi if it has cycled media with only a few days to cycle? Or should I buy some bacteria boost from the lfs to help? I normally have quarantine cycled tanks ready for issues but never expected to get a 10cm koi on such short notice.
Then another question just for future reference if I put bio balls/ceramic rings in an established tank to cycle for setting up new tanks how long till bacteria will be present on the media? Or does it depend on different factors?
Thank you so much for any assistance
    Katja

If it was me, I would get the 4ft going on an established filter, and just to be safe add something like Seachem Stability or equivalent.
Follow the recommended period of 7 days of Stability added to the water, to keep things going.
By this weekend there should be a sufficient colony of bacteria to keep the tank going.
Once the fish is in the tank, the waste it produces will also be fed on, which will help this process along.

Most of the beneficial bacteria lives in the filter media and substrate, with very little in the water column.
One of the reasons people are told to use existing filter media when cycling a new tank, is that the already present bacteria in the filter media will seed the new tank, and keep producing bacteria.

    Agree with @Pezulu

Good luck, baby should be fine until you move him to the pond

About three weeks should be ok but don't overstock the new tank when you use it and add some Stability just to help along
Usually I just pinch some media from the established tank and top up the established tank with the same amount of new media
Obviously not in large enough quantity as to crash the existing tank

Make sure you dose stability daily for at least seven days, and initially after each water change.
