Wondering if I am loosing the plot or what.

Went to an LFS in PTA yesterday, almost did not make it past the tanks on display. A 4ft tank + cabinet that was like R3000 a month ago is now selling for R4400 - BTW it is old stock, I also looked at the other tanks and all had new price tags - a small 2ft starter tank R1200 (was +- 750).

Do these guys not get that more people are needed in the hobby and it starts with affordable tanks?

The aquatic pet market is insanely overpriced. And the LFS get away with it because it is such an exclusive market. I'm in the process of doing market research into a couple of aspects. Can't say much now but might soon

Yeap - and then they try and sell the tanks in Feb they do not understand why nobody is willing to pay more than 1000 for a 4ft ..

We sell 1.5ft COMPLETE bundles without heaters and lights for R200. R750 is way too much.

It was a Daro special. They didn't come with cabinets unfortunately.
They came with a background, small corner filter, air pump, 2Kg of pea gravel, some Daro de-chlorinator and some filter wool and a plastic lid. A great price for starting a nano even for just the tank and the lid.

even the fish are way over priced, walked into an LFS and they are asking R19.50 for a neon! Yip a NEON, not a cardinal.

R19.50 for a neon!! R1200 for a 2ft starter?!?!? Goeie vy! (best said in afrikaans)

I am getting gladder I live in Cape Town daily! Depending on LFS here neons price around R7.50..... Saw a COMPLETE 4ft setup (light, balast, tank, filter, heater) for R999 the other day in a LFS special offer here.... sure it wasn't Jager heaters etc, but to lure new people to the hobby that's awesome!

ALL retail push there prices up in October / Novemeber to reap the benefits of early Christmas shoppers, and then in December put the prices back down to normal price, and say "Was xxx, Now yyy, YOU SAVE zzz" and you are left thinking you made a bargain. Mean time you still paying the normal inflated price. It's standard practice.

I know we use to do it in Mica. Oct/Nov was always new prices.

Welcome into the land of milk and honey - that's now for the LFS owners, we as the hobbiest's need to put the hand deep down into the pocket and cough up. Luckily we here in Rustenburg have a LPS that is very reasonable with his prices, support him all the way. For those of you that need to cough blood, I feel your pain, had to buy from such stores previously.

Jinne! We went into a place here in Midrand about two weeks ago. R125 for angel about the size of a R2 coin. A regular run of the mill male betta was R50. We picked up two beauts that we'll be using for breeding, in Boksburg at R25 a pop. I'm not sure if I'm just seriously blind, but we don't have many places out here, so I think they charge whatever they like. BTW, you can the same size angel in PTA for anything between R35 and R75. Justsayin.

If it were Altum angels I would have paid it but I doubt it was.

Here's crazy for you. Cherry shrimp at R90 a pop and yes they are blacklisted.

Nope, regular run of the mill agterplaas quality. There was one almost perfect black angel but I know where not to spend money.

I called my local LFS that was selling a filter for R130 more for the same filter than a popular place in boksburg, telling him that I would rather support him for a R800 purchase, not a thank you or anything just a bad look for the 10% discount he gave.

Jungle aquatics is moving to centurion as far as I know.hmmm to eldo falls I think. So Then the prices in the region will drop with all the competition.

Hi All, I'm a newbie doing research and getting all my facts together, want to start out and get into being an Aquarist... Can someone nudge me in the right directions for breeders or good reasonably priced aquarium specific shops. I want to start keeping African Cichlids, looking at either Mbuna Malawi's or Lak Tanganyika Cichlids...
Would appreciate any help or advice.
    PS. From Cape Town
    Thanx :)
