I want to add a small bottom feeder/dweller to my tank. Tank mates are some Zebra Danios, Cardinal Tetras & a Rainbow shark.

    Corys seem to fit the bill, I think. I have a 3ft tank, with swimmable dimensions approx. 900(L) x 300(W) x 260(H).

Any advice from the specialists? :blink1: I'm looking at the Peppered or Panda cory.

    Thanks in advance!

    What is your tank's temperature?

Both Peppered and Panda Cories like their water not too hot and I will recommend keeping them at around 25C. The only problem I see with the tank mates might be the rainbow shark. They can harrass other fish quite a bit.

Hey if you're looking for cories, I know a guy who can get the peppered, bronze and albino ones for R10 ea, the other varieties are slightly more expensive! haha! pm me for his number/email if you're interested!

Hi there! They are very entertaining little low maintainance fish! They even breed easily if your water parameters are relatively stable. The only special care they need is with regards to the temperature (as mentioned) and substrate. They need smooth and preferably relatively fine substrate as they feel around in it for food particles with their super sensitive barbels, any rough edges and they can injure their barbels and starve to death.

Also please keep in mind that even though they make a very effective cleaning crew for left overs, they need a balanced diet (algae wafers, bottom feeder pellets) like any other pet.

They are schooling fish, so keep at least five together. They will school with different breeds, but in my experience they can be a bit picky about this - my bronze cories are inseperable but they tend to not hang around their peppered friends too often, but then again my peppered cories are a bit boring :)

Hope I've covered the most important points there. Anyway, in short they are very interesting little characters and a great addition to almost any community tank.

@Irma. If DesertConvert does not take you up on the offer then I certainly will. Also interested in Stebai, what will you be asking for them?

I try to keep it at 25C, though with the colder weather it has dropped to 24C. I watch the shark with a beady eye :) In the year that I have had him/her I've had no major conflict, though he does occasionally shoo the others away from his browsing spot :)

Thank you, I will gladly take them. PM sent.

My substrate is 'medium' - stone size max. 5mm - doesn't seem sharp to me, but maybe to the Corys? Should I add some river sand over the gravel?
