a friend of mine recently gave me 12 or so convicts (theyre still small) and ive been reading about them. i know that they r agressive and need a 100l tank for a pair or 2 and i just wanted to know a few things...1)does any 1 want to buy some from me,2)what tank mates can i get for them 3)what plants can i get that they wont destroy and 4) they r very...distant and allways hidding and ive made ample hidding places with rocks and drift wood! any other advice would be greatly apprciated(sorry for the spelling mistakes im typing on my cell)

    regards DS DG

Firstly are you sure their just hiding and not nesting because they start from a very small size?i think its best to keep them with similarly minded fish a few that spring to mind are now blacklisted so we wont go there but all depends on the size of your tank.jack dempseys maybe a pair of firemouths.wouldnt mind taking some off you how much are you charging?

Ive got two convict in a seperate 100l tank ( Had to take them out of the 4foot tank , cos when they start spawning , they drive their tank mates to the corners!!) They are breeding non stop , and now i seem to have found myself in a rut!! I went to the lps , and none of them want the oldest of the fry (they are about 2.5cm) Any advice of what to do with them? i dont want to kill them , but i cant keep them.. If anyone wants some convicts , or even the parents , just let me know??

Seems like there is no clear answer to convicts being on the list and no one can find them on there.

I phone one of the well known fish shop franchises branch in cape town and they had 8cm convicts for R15 and then I called two big lps and one of them told me that they are blacklisted and illegal to trade.
The other pet shop had them in stock so I bought 6.
Is there any website that tells you all the fish that blacklisted.
Every pet shop expect one told nothing about being illegal to trade.

I have the same problem. 4 out of 5 lps have convicts and until today i had no idea about this "black-list".

So if somebody has a convict what are they supposed to do? Kill it or are we supposed to register them somewhere? Imagine if the 4 lps that stock convicts killed all of them (my estimate is at approximately 120 fish), i am sure that some animal rights activist would have something to say about it!

They are not on the blacklist yet that anyone can find.
Just please don't dump them anywhere in a pond or something.

oh well, but hey i spoke to a LPS owner and he said that there is no market for them? i understand that theres a high supply and low demand but the demand cant possibly be that low!!! all over the net and even in books, they all say the convicts have always been a favorite. ok yes they aren't as colourful as MalawiS but they got just as much character(and even more sexual hormones ;) ) BUT WHY DONT PEOPLE WANT THEM!!!! THEY ARE AWESOME FISH!!!

Heres a theory: Yes they were somewhat colorful fish, hardy and bred easily giving the novice some degree of satisfaction breeding a tropical fish.

Now with the internet and such the general aquarist has matured somewhat and are now looking for a challenge. Even here on the forum you will discover the general guy keeping and breeding a fish that is a little more exotic and giving him that more satisfaction in his achievement.

Previously that same guy could not keep a discus alive so never bothered wasting money on them. He now has a wealth of knowledge and support to help him.

But that is just my theory.

Okay I have a pair of convicts they are awsome. Mine is in a 5ft with tinfoils, dollars, a parrot and a plec. They do fine with all the fish the dollars are as big as a R5 but they don't harm them in anyway, only shows aggression towards the parrot but the parrot shows aggression as well. The male is building a nest and protecting it with all that he's worth lol but yet again only showing aggression towards the parrot. Spoke to a LPS owner in roodepoort he said they have a lot of character and I think so too, I think each person have their own opinion on all types of fish.
