Convict Cichlid

Hi there

I have a 455Litre tank that has 1 oscar(still small) and 1 royal pleco in it at the moment .


I want to get some convict cichlids to go with them but i am not to sure as to how many i can get?
The oscar is getting a new tank in a month to go for a oscar only tank along with he pleco so the 455Litre will just be convicts.

Ive read 70Litre per convict so i'd say i can get about 6?

 

However, I agree with Reedfish here: spawning changes things. In my experience, they were pretty nasty parents, and I had to split up my entire setup to calm things down again. That, and now you have even more convicts to deal with (until you can sell them off/give them away).

455 litres is a lot of space, though...

 

keep male only tank is best way to keep most central american cichlids
lots of hiding spaces and retreats for weaker fish with high density similar to how you would keep Malawis
try keep temp low ie 24 and have min lighting
ltr not so important more about floor space
shallow wide tank better than deep tank

but as above one female will result in chaos as pair will become very aggressive and defend fry till the last
