I am just a bit worried about the glass.

    The dimension is H = 1000mm W = 250mm L = 1450mm

Will be fish only tank not much room to aqua scape.

I really want to do this if/when we move house. Glass will be fine as long as you buy a thick enough pane - will be expensive, but at least you only have to buy 1 instead of 5!

Wow this is so cool. I love the idea. I think i might try something like this. You could probably go even bigger if you had the space. How did you work out the glass thickness?

Some of you may know of my natural pool? It is built like a pool, IOW gunite with a LOT of steel reinforcing and it has a "window". The glass is about 8-10cm thick, made up of 4/5 (I forget the details, it was a while ago :p) 1 cm thick panes of glass laminated together. It is 1m x 1m. It is set into in a stainless steel frame, so there is only about 80cm of glass exposed. (I wanted 1m exposed, but there was a miscommunication!!!) The frame was more expensive than the glass because it is not easy to weld stainless steel.

Gunite is apparently very strong because of the method by which it is applied. It is mixed just before it is sprayed on which means the concrete crystals will be stronger (this is what I was told at the time by the people building it). If you can get your concrete tank gunited, that would be good.

I'm trying to convince my hubby that his featherfins will be much happier in an indoor tropical pond. If I get that right, I think this will be the way to go :D

@Jenn – Gunite is only as strong as your cement/sand/additive/water ratio so no stronger than cast concrete. The reason why you would choose gunite over another process is it’s easier (sometimes), quicker (generally) and easier to form shaped edges (definitely).

The process for guniting for those that don’t know and are interested is that a dry cement blend is fed into a gunite mixer which is driven by air. The air turns the blades/fins that feeds the blend into the delivery hose and it is propelled from there via air to the nozzle (point where it is being applied). Water is added at the nozzle and this mix is “shot” onto the area it is required.

You can spray thicknesses of 90mm and more (with additives) in a single go.

Please post that thread on your tank as I look forward to seeing the process. I hope you took lots of build photos.

Sorry for the long dull post :alberteinstein: :boring:

To add to the long, dull post ;) ... I was told that cement starts forming crystals as soon as it is mixed with water & that is why gunite is stronger because those bonds aren't broken with so much stirring (like when it's mixed in your wheelbarrow). I may have been told nonsense?

Well, I did, but... it was on my cell phone and that phone was stolen in a smash & grab :( I may have a few on my pc.

That's the only way you can scape a pond under sunlight.

I think they sold you a line of ....:flute:

Overmixing will cause your concrete to seperate causing it to lose strength but that is not the reason why gunite is stronger than concrete or vica versa. The reason is down to the mix design. I can design 30Mpa gunite and 50Mpa concrete or 50Mpa gunite and 30Mpa concrete. The reason for gunite over other products is due to it's application.

Sorry to further add to the long dull post:embarrest:
Eish! Glad it wasn't a snatch and grab

Certainly. Just coat/paint/line the concrete with something as it does contain nasties to fish and is generally not waterproof.
