I'm looking for compatible tank mates for my Hifin Pangasius and Black Ghost fish which are housed together. Also in the tank is a clown Knife, Large golden Gourami, Blue Gourami, Pleco. All are doing well with each other. The problem is that the shark will eat anything that can fit into his mouth.Any suggestions for tank mates?

My Only Suggestion would be to get fish thats larger than the sharks mouth so that they cant get eaten
any fish the size of your shark or your other fish should be fine Pangasius are kinda peaceful just they grow very large so you need large tank mates
They Can Grow Over a Meter in length

Pangasius themselves are quite compatible fish; however, there are 2 kinds of fish that you cannot house with them: fish smaller than them, and fish that get frightened/disturbed by their constant movement.

What this means is that those two gouramis can already be labelled as unsuitable tankmates, because not only will the pangaius be large enough to eat them, but also they tend to do much better in setups that are a lot more calm. The black ghost would also appreciate a similar environment.

In reality, you're looking at trying to keep all the larger Asian river species - Giant Gouramis, Clown Knifefish, Tinfoil barbs, diaomond barbs, cigar sharks (barbs), and maybe as far as South American fish go, big catfish like Red-tailed catfish and Tiger shovelnose would work too.

The common trait among these fish is that they all grow to enormous sizes; the smallest fish that I've mentioned is the diamond barb, which attains just under 30cm in most cases. All the other fish commonly reach over 50cm in captivity, and therefore you'll be looking at getting a huge tank in excess of 1000 litres (maybe a whole lot more) with MASSIVE filtration. Big fish = big waste. What makes a big tank even more crucial is the fact that pangasius are such active swimmers, and need so much extra space just to be comfortable. If you can, get a tropical pond. These can hold much more water than a typical tank (with less risks) and they have rounded corners, which will help prevent the pangasius from bashing its nose so much.

Most pangasius species are shoaling fish, especially when they're younger. That's why they should rather be kept in schools, where they'll be much more confident and less likely to succumb to stress disease. Besides adding more pangasius to the school, you could also increase the current in the tank to try and raise activity.

Before you think about buying more pangasius, though, remember that these fish are capable of reaching 30cm in the first year of their life. Within 5 years I could imagine them reaching roughly a meter. Consider this, and then think about how much space a school of 1 meter pangasius will need...

Rather consider returning your single pangasius to the shop.

The answer is there, from my previous post :)

Also read up a bit more on Hi-fins here on Planetcatfish, and take a look at the pictures too. It's a big fish; consider a bigger tank.

I doubt you will find a 5m aquarium (unless its at Ushaka or Two Oceans Aquarium). Even if you do, I doubt you will have the space for it, Unless you wanna convert your entire lounge into an aquarium.

You need to know that the cost of building such an aquarium is expensive. too expensive.

My advice to you is rather get a large pond constructed in front of your house.

    OR .....http://www.aquarticles.com/articles/management/Arapaiman_Monster_Tank_MFK_version.html that.
