Hi - It's my first time setting up co2, so please excuse my ignorance.
    I have bought a 1-liter ISTA bottle and a good quality - Co2 Art PRO-SE Series Regulator.
The problem here is that the bottle thread is in a verticle orientation - not the usual elbow/horizontal configuration. I will be standing the bottle upright because as I understand, this is the ONLY safe way to use a gas bottle. However, this will leave my regulator in a sideways orientation instead of upright.
Is this a problem? Are regulators only designed to be installed and used in their upright position?
Pictures of both pieces of equipment to follow.
PS. I realize that the included bubble counter would not work like this - my intention was to leave it dry and attach another counter in line.
    Thanks

Putting a gas bottle on its side can lead to leaking - which is obviously bad if you’re using LPG / flammable gas.

For CO2 it won’t explode but will push up your gas bill and potentially more gas into your water which will push up your livestock bill…

The orientation of the gauge itself shouldn’t really matter. It will still give you the correct readings, and push out the correct amount of gas.

(Btw I’m new around these parts - busy starting my planted tank at the moment)

(Second edit - just saw the bubble counter. Which has to be upright… so no it won’t work with the bottle upright. But you can get a bigger co2 bottle which will allow it to stand in the correct position)

You won't be able to use that regulator with the bubble counter in an upright position as the bubble counter will not work correctly.

You can remove the bubble counter and connect the tubing directly to the outlet but then you need an in-line bubble counter.

Best option is to get a cylinder where the regulator fits on the side.

I've been down this road before with ISTA and aluminium cylinders that connect at the top and tried finding adapters/connectors that would allow a side connection but no luck.

    Thanks, @Fredster @mxz
Yes, I realize that the included bubble counter would not work in this orientation - my intention is to leave it dry and connect another counter in-line.
My main concern is that the regulator will work correctly and safely in this sideways configuration.

The regulator’s job is to reduce the high pressure out of the cylinder to a lower pressure that then translates into the correct amount of co2 going into the water.

This process isn’t affected by gravity, so there’s no reason for the regulator not to work in any orientation.

You can screw off the bubble counter and connect the tubing directly to the outlet.

I had the same regulator on a smaller ISTA canister running in that orintation for a while before switching cylinders.

Just note that as the aluminium cylinder empties, it becomes lighter so the whole unit will become top heavy and there's a greater chance of it falling over.
