    Hi

How do you clean a tank that have had meds in it to make sure there is no copper or other residue left behind?

Or even if you may just suspect it may be something else on the tank sides.

My snails keep dying but all the other fish and plants show no symptoms of poor health.

If I am not mistaken, snails are very sensitive to copper.
Have you used any meds that may have any copper in it?
I assume that you would clean it by emptying it. If so, there is a glass clean made by a company called Earthsap that is 100% natural. It even says on the bottle that it is save for aquatic and marine life. I have not used it before, but read about it on another forum. Quite keen to try it myself. Oh, and it should be available at Pick 'n Pay as well as online.

Thanks Darryn I will see if I can find some.

Did not use any copper based meds though.

I have washed all the tanks before but the problem persist.

Cant be the water because the lfs is using the same tap water and there snails are fine.

You should filter your water through Activated Carbon (charcoal). This will remove any heavy metals in the water.

Alternatively, what do the snails have to eat in the tank? Are you feeding them? Is there enough algae to keep them fed?

Do their shells turn white before they die? This indicates a lack of calcium in the tank. Calcium is used to grow their shells.

Tried the carbon but nothing. I am also using a water conditioner that removes heavy metals, or so they say.

Feeding them lettuce leefs, carrots ets so food is not the problem.

They usually do not last long enough to do some growing. Avg about 2 days and it goes belly up.

I have never had a problem with algae. Maybe there is something in the water that kills algea and snails. Maybe the Lfs do not change water that often so theres might still be older water before they added what they do now.

Collected some rain water yesterday and got new snails today, so if they survive it must be the water, I think.

What you should be doing is filtering the water in a separate container before adding it to your tank. You should also be changing the activated carbon regularly. It eventually becomes fully laden to the point where it begins leaching the substances it has absorbed back into the tank.

Another thing, what is the temp of the water? Hardness? PH? Nitrite? Nitrate? Ammonia?

normally if the silicone is blue instead of clear you can almost be certain that there was copper base medication used in the tank. normaly the best and fastest way to get ride of this would be to remove the silicone and re seal the tank as the copper will carry on leaching out of the silicone slowly indefinatly.
