If you have plastic canopies and looking for a cheap option then get a few energy saver bulbs. The colour temperature is not exactly perfect for plants, but it works I have done this before. Try get the biggest ones that will fit without hanging too close to the water.

agreed, try to find some in the "daylight" range or those that have a 6400K or 6500K rating.

Good thread that... I must say I have two normal el-cheapo (granted they claim they are for plant growth) 20w Fluro Tubes with ballasts lighting my 3ft tank which is heavily planted and my plants a growing at a rate of knots (this may also be down to the indirect sunlight that the tank recieves from my bay window)...

Although saying that if I had to redo my lighting I would most likely go for those CFL bulbs as they sound the business...

I have also looked for these everywhere. Every1 knows what I am looking for, but they don't keep it as stock. The K@k thing then is that Osram is not prepared to sell loose globes to the shop, so I'd have to buy a box of 25! Not going to happen at R60+ p/tube

Try any of your electrical wholsalers, or specialist lighting stores, I work for an electrical wholesaler, so it's easy for me...... Alternately if you have a friend that is an electrician, ask them where they get their supplies.

Th problem is that they just dont do so well in the post.....
