    Hi everyone.

Obviously new here. I so wanted a marine aquarium, I bought books, did research had a lot of own design ideas and so forth. I figured I'll buy one or two things a month until I had everything I needed to start.

Something came over me though and I thought (just for interest sake) let me add the costs of everything together........HOLY CRAP with the total I got I could actually buy a second hand Tazz cash.

Needless to say I let the whole thing go, obviously the Marine game are for the super rich only.

Please tell me that Tropical is A LOT cheaper because I would really like to get a nice system running.

    - yes

You still need to do that research and decide are you going planted, fish only or a nice balanced system. The only real problem with tropical - it leads to MTS faster than marine.

So tell us what are the plans?

What do you have, what do you want (size etc) when you adding water to that dream?

Have a look at the beginners sections, some sticky threads will save you months of pain.

    That is great news!!

I was thinking to start with something small, a nano maybe. Do tropical aquariums benefit from a sump as much as a marine one does?

    Thanks for the welcome.

    Welcome to TASA JacoJs.
Hope you have a great time here!

Actually, A nano tank might sound easier to start with but can be a little more difficult to maintain than a bigger tank. Bigger tanks have a greater advantage over smaller aquariums. The more water that is present in an aquarium, the less vulnerable it is to changes. A larger body of water will have a larger buffer and changes then happen at a slower rate. For example, a small and a large aquarium are in the same room and both are unheated (room temperature). If the room temperature drops, this will cause a drop of water temperature in both aquariums. It will however take a longer time for the temperature to drop in the larger aquarium due to the larger volume. Dead fish or poisons also have a smaller impact on a large volume than on a small volume. When there is a power failure, a large aquarium offers a better chance of survival for the fish than a smaller aquarium.
It's also smart to think about the species of fish you want to keep. Some fish can get pretty large and will out grow a small aquarium in a couple of months, leading to growth retardation and smaller sized or stunted fish.
I would recommend at least a two foot tank as a starter, maybe with a good HOB filter or canister filter instead of a sump! Yes, a sump will work for freshwater, but isn't essential. It's also a heck of a build for a nano or even a two foot aquarium.

welcome to TASA were many of our aqautic addictions started lol. what i would suggest is take a wander around the forum and decide what fish you want and whether you would like to go planted or not and then choose a tank size from there. that way if you fond of the larger fish you can get the right size tank for them to grow into. happy researching

    Welcome

@f-fish. Marine does not lead to MTS so fast due to the cost involved... If it wasn't so expensive the beauty of it would lead to MTS EVEN FASTER than tropical...

LOL - very true ... not ever having a marine tank I can see some of the attraction for the ocean but it seems more commercial than FW
