Prof if you have time please give us your view on filtering tap water through activated carbon (which brand you would recommend) and what is or is not removed by means of this process.

IOW can we make Gauteng water powerfull?

    Hi Cobus,

I have a huge amount of work as a result of which I can only answer briefly.

Activated carbon or activated charcoal binds complex carbon compounds and not salts. It binds any pesticides and herbicides that can be negative but it also removes good things like humic acids, the compounds that are found in peat extract. Bottom line is that you do not need activated charcoal to make the water in Gauteng suitable as it is the salts, the sulphate salts as well as other things, that are the problem and this can be removed by using an RO unit or ion exchange resins. Ion exchange resins need to be regenerated regularly and with nasty acids and alkalis and are labour intensive as a result of which folks prefer RO units as they require less maintenance.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk
