We are experiencing a lot of fish deaths here in Cape Town and are suspecting that they have started to use chloramine in our tap water now. It passes through RO membranes and carbon blocks are useless against it. It also doesn't gas off like chlorine does. Use a dechlor to be safe please. It takes very little to kill. Horrible stuff. Chlorine tests doesn't pick it up either, if anyone has a test for this please give feedback.

If you have traces of ammonia in your tap supply it could be chloramines.

This is where prime is handy, neutralises the chlorine and binds the ammonia for the filter

Would be good if the municipalities informed residents of changes to water treatment...

This is not relevant to most people. The municipality's main concern is safe drinking water. It is the aquariasts responsibility to ensure that you take sufficient precaution to ensure that your fish receive water that is suitable for their requirements

Refrain water changes or topup on Fridays and the day before a public holiday. Use prime or safe for water change and topups.
