    Hi Guys ,

Not sure if this has been asked about before , but I have recently been to a reputable LFS and when I enquired about a canister filter for my tank to purchase , the owner at the LFS mentioned to me that he has stock but does not recommend a canister filter as its not if the seals will leak , its when it will leak , as when there is a power outage the gravity causes the water to leak back from the tank causing the seals to pop.

Has anyone has issues like this before.

    Regards

    Nigel

Having a canister for 6 years, I never had a problem with the seals. It is people that constantly open and close and cleaning the canister that buggers up the seal. This salesman is clearly a noob.

I'm running an Aqua One and Tetra canister filters. I have never had any issues with them.

I would highly recommend canister filters over anything else. The flow is adjustable, you have more space in the tank. You can add more filter media and you add about 10l of extra water to your tank depending on what filter size you take. Only downfall is they a bit more expensive!!

Personally I would not hesitate taking a canister filter if I had the money.

It's settled then, cannister Filter it is. Thanks for the input guys. Much appreciated. By the way the tank is 4 feet, and will be stocked with rummy nose tetras, corydoras and shrimp. This according to the lfs didn't warrant a canister filter as the bio load was small enough to use a normal internal filter.

This lfs clearly didn't want your money  the more filtration, the better, no matter how stocked your tank is. Just as long as the filter isn't so powerful it blasts your poor fish out the tank, but then you just buy the right filter for your tank size and adjust your flow

Oh also with shrimp, make sure you get a sponge to cover the intake of the filter otherwise it'll suck up shrimp

I think it was mentioned somewhere on the forum that our load-shedding causes the cannisters to fail possibly due to the surge when the power goes back on . If you do go with a cannister then get a surge protect plug as well .
