Canister Shock

Hi guys

last night while doing my weekly wc,I felt a slight shock whenever I put my finger in the tank.

initially I thought it must be 1 of the heaters as this is the only piece of equipment submerged. I removed and unplugged the heaters but still the shock occurred.

eventually figured it out to be the canister filter( dophin c1600). now my question is:

-canister still pumps and runs, it must be the pump/motor as it is exposed to water?
-are there any solutions to this problem?
-are there any shops up in cape town that repairs canisters or provides new motors?

 

I have never experienced anything like that.
Would be interesting to see the answers and solutions to this, as it could possibly happen to anyone.

 

I have but it was just the static electricity I build up when walking atleast it wasn't my filter.

 

Wait you put your finger back in the tank after the first shock?

 

Yup, better to replace the canister, i had an internal filter that did the same, was the seal that went and allowed moisture to get to the electronic motor

 

What about repairing the canister filter?
A new C1600 costs anything from R2500 upwards.

 

Funerals is about R20000

lol. it was a very slight static shock, like a needle prick of sorts.

my thoughs exactly @Pezulu. if I can replace rather then buy a new unit, that would be awesome.

last I checked,SAMS stocked canister parts so will give him a call.

I checked all wires and all are fine, pity these canisters are such a plain to get into. only the part housing the motor must still be checked

 

the marine guys run some sort of circuit interrupter.

I will have to research this abit more

 

Ja sorry guys I call electricity the invisible killer, if I change the flash light batteries I even switch off the mains to the house.
Only way I will trust an electrical piece of equipment in water is if it was repaired by an agent and they give me 100% assurance it's fine.

@T Jack -this sounds a bit strange.
You are in CT, I would like to have a look at your canister. I am in the Southern Subs, perhaps you can pop by sometime.

Indeed a lot of the marine guys have a little system in place to protect themselves, yes one of their members met an untimely death due to faulty equipment but it is not related to marines only.
So we should also have the same system in place but I guess most of us don't (including yours truly but I am going to implement it on all of my tanks).

I just phoned SAMS,he says nothing can be done as its probably leaking by one of the seals

 

This is scary stuff. I'm no sparky but all the filters and heaters sold only have two prong plugs on them, why no ground wire like a three prong? Or are two prongs grounded?

 

No they are not.
That is why you should earth your tank so your earth leakage protection relay can kick in.

 

Unplug the canister and just attach a power head to the intake pipe so you can still use it as a filter.

 

@JCL good to know, never thought about that until today. How do you ground it?
