Hi! Watching a lot of videos on YouTube, I see that a lot of people use canister filters PLUS an additional internal or HOB filter or powerhead as well? Is this overkill? I would have thought that one decent canister filter would suffice for a 243l tank not overstocked for example? Or am I missing something?

Filtration depends from tank to tank. I large canister filter with good flow should be good enough. Personally I have a canister filter as well 3 sponge filters. Lots of easy plants that help keep nitrates down and I try to keep stock to acceptable levels.

I prefer to over filtrate rather than battle later on

I had a Fluval 405 on a fully stocked Malawi tank of this size.
    Never had a problem.

A small internal could be a good idea as a back up if you are concerned
