Hi there - got a 300l Juwel tank - only a few weeks old and the built in filter system is starting to irritate - I may want to take it out and replace with a canister type. What make is worth looking at - considering availability of filtration material as well?

A cheaper option for a canister will be Bowini. I find it to be cheaper and works on par with Eheim and fluval. Perhaps you can buy two Bowini canister filters with a faster filtration rate for the same price you would pay for 1 Fluval.

I found the Fluval to be really well priced of late, compared to what I remember them being not too long ago.

Well I can only imagine that it means he needs to remove it from inside the tank to clean or maintain it etc etc.

That is exactly it - need to remove the power head to get media out - then when you remove the media baskets lots of gunk gets into the tank - also at times difficult to then get the power head back = Juwel makes a great tank ( albeit pricey ) but not the greatest filter.

@Asgar. Do you know where to get a replacement motor for those bowini filters?

You can try Tropical World in clairwood.

Bowini's are really cheap and last long as other famous brands. If you cant find a replacement motor, just buy a new canister.

By the way, has your motor packed up or are you just asking?

Motor packed up after 1.5 yrs. Really liked that shop in Clairwood, does the owner still breed fish there? I remember that he used to be very cheap.

i was under the impression that he closed down. I've seen the other shop, its way smaller than the original place he had. I remember walking into that place and seeing literally thousands of angel fish
