My planted tank is 60x50x50 and I use a 1000lph sunsun cannister which I feel doesn't do a good enough job. I have bought (but not installed) a tidal 35 filled with matrix. I can update in a few weeks if that made a difference. The tank is always clean but the flow seems a little weak for my liking

In practice a cannister filter rarely gives the rated flow. So that Eheim is rated for about 6x your volume but once the biomedia, sponges etc are in it could be about 4x which is good. That’s my guess for what it’s worth. I hear they’re excellent filters.

The problem with canister filters or rather their manufacturers is, they rate the filter flow rate on empty filters sitting level with the tank. When you place the canister below the tank you then have to take into consideration the head pressure . Or the pressure the filter has to over come just to get the water up to the tank. Never mind how adding media and sponges impacts the water flow. So realistically speaking , you can half the rating on the box of a canister filter , unless you are planing to put the filter on a level surface with the tank. I have a normal 3ft tank that I use an aquaclear 70 on, the flow rate is very very good. Have no issues with it at all. I have sponge, filter flos and a huge bag of media in it. My water is crystal clear. for tanks around this size I would always use A decent hob filter . Unless of course you want to add a sump. That is a totally different ball game
