is this possible and to what extent?

how many watts per liter/galon becomes harmfull?

and what fish species are prone?

I'm not sure about the lights killing the fish but I'm pretty sure that if a fish is a nocturnal species and there are no hiding places, and the lights are really bright and on for long periods, this could stress the fish out and lead to problems and possibly even death due to stress? To be honest I've never thought about it....can't wait to hear what everyone else thinks on this one.

    One of two ways:

As Vee said, if the lights are too bright, nocturnal or shy feeders may not eat at all, and die of either stress or starvation.

Otherwise, a light falling in the tank will more than likely kill your fish, no matter what species.

Only ways I can think of...

if you compare lights to sunlight as the ultimate light source, i don't think the light (meaning the photons etc) can kill fish, but possibly the duration as Vee suggested, or if it prevents a fish from feeding or stresses them out too much, but as per the original question, i don't thing any watt/gallon ratio would result in death by light

I actually had that problem, I left my lights on in the tank for 12hours a day and fed the fish about 2 hours before I switched them off and because of that I lost one of my clown knife fish because he never ate at all he was always in hiding till one day I found him and it was already to late to do any thing. So to much light on the wrong fish could lead to there death.
