Hi all, my betta was acting a bit lethargic since yesterday. This evening I checked on him and he was very bloated with very visible red worms protruding from his anus. After some research this is very clearly a Camallanus worm infestation. I've read that Dovaworm or Nemarid are effective cures for this. Does anyone know where I can get these in Cape Town? Or otherwise and alternate treatment that is also available in Cape Town?

    General info on the tank:
    30L tank
    90L/hr internal power filter.
    Fully planted with sand substrate.
Been running for about 10 months.
I do weekly water changes of about 20%
    Test strip from tonight shows <10 NO2, 0 NO3, 7<dGh<14, 6 dKH and 7.2 PH.
Inhabitants: 1 adult betta (showing camallanus infestation), 1 pepper cory showing no signs of infestation, about 6 cherry shrimp, a few rams horn snails. All tank inhabitants have been in the tank at least 3 months.
Feeding is a mix of Hikari Betta gold and Sera shrimp pellets.

Yup, callamanus for sure. Had the same a while back and actually treated using Dovaworm (which is higher concentration), although Nemarid will work but requires a more drawn out dosing plan.
Both you should be able to find at Panorama Pets in Parow.
Hate to say it, but it's a bit of a job to sort out - major vacuum of tank after a week of treatment, then again a week later and ideally a third time two weeks after that if memory serves.
The worms become paralysed and need to be removed that way. It was successful for me though, the treatment.

Yeah thought so. I went to panorama pets today. They didnt have dovaworm, but they did have one last bottle of nemarid and tramisol (also levamisole). Went with the nemarid because he was willing to eat this morning. Of course he now refuses to eat the treated food - just spits it out so I will go back for some tramisol tomorrow.

I added garlic & vitamin C drops (some local equivalent of Seachem Garlicguard) to their food as well, else they wouldn’t eat. And I used frozen food - Ocean Nutrition bloodworms or brine shrimp

Unfortunately not. Meds are the only way you will be able to get rid of them.
