Just came across this site by mistake, i am lover of polypterus and have 30 of them 4 species. I wud like to chat to sum other polypterus keepers, and if any1 is looking for polys, i can help them out as im always looking for more.

Theres r abt 1year old pics of the fish, the largest 1 is the ornate abt40cm and abt 5cms thick, she is abt 8yrs old as i have been told by the petshop.

What sort of setup do you have in terms of tank size and filtration? And what you feeding?

 

Thanks, 180x60x80cms tank, custom built 5foot wet/dry sump,1000lcanister,1000linternal filter,I feed them mostly hikari massivore pellets, prawns, hake,Gold fish feeders(not in along time as my quar tank broke)

Do you have any problems with aggression or do they all behave?

I'm really tempted to get a poly again.. They just so awesome..

U shud get 1 thats how i started out abt 1.5yrs ago and look at now,1 tank has went to four tanks.
Aggression-i have only lost 1poly to another poly, but i dont not if it was through aggression or the other was not too well(jumped out the tank during W/C nite before) Other than this 1 time no other polys were eaten by my other polys, fish eaten by my polys is whole other story.

Im in JHB, this is the only place that i have a chance of getting diff polys as there are allot of fish importers based in GP. Im gud friends with the LFS and few importers so as soon as a poly shipment comes in i here abt it. Allot of LFS dont stock them due to the demand of them being very low compare to the other pretty common fish.Im sure in CPT its rare to see poly's as it is also here in JHB, so as soon as i see any i buy

Senegalis is often available her in CPT. Others do pop up on the odd occasion.

When I saw Endlicheri for the first time in the LPS here I immediately bought one. It was a good excuse to upgrade my tank at the time as well.

 

Large enough tank(depends on which1 ) and water, these fish once big is hard to kill. Basic care of the tank, senegalus poly(common brown 1) can go with almost any types of fish and are quite peaceful, if tankmates will not fit in its mouth it leaves them alone. just rem big fish eat small fish

How big was the endi that u had? what tank u got?

I had him in a 1.2m tank for about 9 months. He was 7cm when I got him. +-25cm when I sold him. Anyone wanting to keep polypterus should have the proper setup before getting them as they grow damn fast.



I got a 1.2m tank at the moment. 1.8m tank is coming in the next week or two.
