    Hey Hey!

I was about to put my son to bed last night when I noticed a very yellow Caca female coming out of a hole in the top of my bog wood! I went closer to investigate and found that she was chasing anything that came close to the little hole!

I looked further into it, and noticed a number of bright orange dots in the hole, and a few white ones!

So, It looks as tho my Cac's have been busy!? From what I can see, there are only around 10 or so eggs, with about 6-8 being bright orange, and a few being white. I cannot see into the hole fully to know for sure how many eggs are in there, but I'm just chuft that I have eggs!

I do not expect the fry (should they make it past eggs stage) to survive being in a community tank, but we'll see what happens! This time at least I'll let nature take its course, but I may move them to a breeding tank if they look like they'll spawn again!?

I may also move them to another tank if this batch of fry make it, before being eaten by the marauding masses! I'm so glad I got rid of those Rainbows! they'd have a field day!

Anyhow, one question, I was due to do a water change (gravel Vacuum) today, so can I still go ahaead and do that, or will this be too stressfull for the female??

    Thanks for reading Folks!

    Cheers
    Big G!

    well done man!

will you be using aged water to top up? water out of the tap, even if dechlorinated, could be a bad idea for the development of the eggs. a small gentle water change without any vacuuming should not disturb her to much!

After a 30% removal of water, I do the top up again in stages so add fresh water gradually 5L - 10L at a time! Its not aged for a day or so, but I try to at least give it an hour to settle with the Dechlorinater! I wanted to Vacuum because there is a fair bit of Mulm accumulating that I planned on removing!

Its a 1.2m tank, and the nook shes laid in is around halfway! I was just going to try and remove some from the one end which is less densely planted!?

But don't want to cause her stress!

    Cheers!

Depending on what else is in the tank, the female will aggressively guard her fry. At night, leave a small light near the tank on so she can see and defend her babies. This will help to minimize predation of the spawn.

Well done. Now post pics!! WE DEMAND YOU POST THE PICS!!! :p

    Ok, Ok! OK!!!! Enough Already!

I'll try and take some pics a little later on, but it is in an awkward position, so makes things difficult! I'll see what I can do!

She has been chasing everything except the silver tips away, but none of the fish have tried to go into the hole! She left the hole for a short while and swam under the Bog wood, but then came quickly back chasing a couple of neons that were hovering above the hole!

Until later! I am preparing 3 breeding tanks in wait of an Apistogramma delivery!

    Cheers

Ok, I hope this works, here goes with the pics.... You'll have to excuse the qualiity on some/all of them! the angle I needed to take the picture on was quite severly affected/distorted by the glass!

Cacatuoides Male - I believe to be a Sunburst, but there seems to be some doubt! Hopefully the pick will settle any doubts! He is a little more orange at times than this pic shows....

Female Hovering over hole.... Looking mighty bright and Feisty Yellow....

Female appearing out of the hole in which the 7 or so bright orange eggs are....

    Beautiful fish dude!!

Yes, they are 110%, most definitely, without a shadow of doubt, Sunburst Cacatuoides. They still look quite small. I have a male that is about 10cm head to tail...

Oh, and if anyone happens to know what type of Algae is on the wood, I'd greatly appreciate it!? I the past week it has exploded out of all proportions!

    Cheers

That looks like the dreaded Clado... Good luck. Get an old toothbrush and use that to remove it.

Yer, the Male is about 6cm, and the female is maybe 4-5cm, but so slim she looks much smaller!

As for the Eggs, I am still unsure how many eggs there actually are? I can only see 7, but can't see into the entire hole! I could not get into a position to take a pic of the eggs! Lens is too long to focus! I'd have to stand on the roof I think!?! haha!

    Cheers!
    Big G!

Yer, I've removed it from previous pieces of wood, but its grown back! Its all over my plant leaves, and as you can see in the background, the Red Cabomba is now pretty much green!

I thought it was brush algae, and the plants came from the display tank that I have to get repaired, which had BBA! This looked the same, only its stayed green!

If it is Clado, is it hazardous to the fish, and will it kill the plants?

    Cheers

No, it's not hazardous, it's just a pain in the (youknowwhat) to get rid of... I think Siamese Algae Eaters like it, and I think Endlers as well... But the best way to kill it, is to remove it manually...

I will be if I get some fry! I've had rams before today that have spawned a number of times, but never any fry! If I get fry, then I'm one step further! Cheers! Big G!

    Hi Folks!

Just an update, I walked past my tank today (after a VERY hectic week) to spot the female hovering above the hole with a load of white Dots around her! I thought that it was more eggs that were unfertile, but then looking closer, I found that they were indeed fry!

So, the 7 or so bright orange eggs must have only been the few I could see, as this clutch of fry is around 30 or so, that I have seen so far!

The female has moved them around a fair bit, and seems to have settled on a bigger hole in the wood! It has been impressive seeing the Male and Female both protecting the Brood! THe female has been so aggresive, I'm amazed nothing else in the tanks has been killed!?

Anyhow, heres a couple of pics....
