Building A Sump - Need Suggestions

So I’ve decided I owe it to my fish in my 600L to give them better filtration.
So I’m going to use my old 300L tank as a sump.

Now I have been reading up and figuring out how many sections I need in it (5) and what media I should use, but I wanted to get the advice of people who have set up a sump and at a later point thought “If only I had done (X)â€.
My tank has a hole in the side of it near the top of the tank, so I will have to get an overflow box made and have the water run in there then obviously down a pipe into the sump.

So please, if anyone has any suggestions or tips & tricks when making a sump or when doing the plumbing of pipes, it would be highly appreciated since this is my first attempt at it.
