Does algae eaters eat this stuff? I have this brown algae in my new tank and the dwarf gourami seems to chow it.

My dwarf gourami eats it so most likely some other fish will as well. Get yourself some siamese algae eaters, apparently they eat basically anything algae like.

Shame we can't get freshwater shrimp in this country. Amano shrimp is also quite formidable in algae control.

Diatoms. Yes they occur both in FW and SW. Usually on new or newly setup tanks

My 2m tank has brown algea growing on the back & side glass but my Tanganyikan Cichlids enjoy this and especially my tropheus. Algea is good for fry as there are microscopic particles that they enjoy. I usually scrap off the glass.
