The brown algae will eventually disappear. Green algae growth will depend on how much light and nutrients the tank gets. Malawis create quite a lot of waste naturally, so strong lighting should see green algae grow well. Even a curtain left open to allow sunlight(watch the temp) into the tank will promote algae growth.

Malawi cichlids browse on aufwuchs and algae in the wild @tanked72. I agree though, you have to watch that it doesn't get out of control.

I didn't know that @Broder but then again I have never kept them and I like planted tanks which you can't have with cichlids

    Hi.

Take a ice cream tub, add some tank water (containing nutrients from the fish) and plop a few stones in there, and leave it in the sun. Algae will grow on it, and you can pop a stone or two in your tank for them to chow on. Once they are cleaned, you swop them out for othe rstones in the tub, and this way you have a constant supply of algae...

Yup, I do this for my Plecs.

Algae alone is not a quality diet for Malawi cichlids. (Mbuna)
You need to feed a decent flake or pellet too.
And they also appreciate some fresh vegetables now and then.
