Brown algae

Hi guys,

Is this Diatoms(pic below) if it is I must just let it run its course. Do plenty water changes. Anything else to help it go away?

 

Never had it before but from what I have heard and my experence the more plants you have competing for the same nutrients the less algae you will have I don't know if it applies to brown algae

 

If its a new tank, it will go away as the tank matures, and the silicate level go down

 

To be honest, I'm not sure if it's algae or diatoms, although I've had it with most new tanks. The longest that it has ever lasted with me, is about 3 months.

 

It is a new tank set up. Will see how it goes, there is no fish in the tank maybe I must try get some ottos in there

 

How new is the setup? 2, 3 months? more?

 

Not even a month @jakkals, was set up on the 13th of this month.

 

My newest tank is 8 weeks old, at the 6 week mark i had a lot of the same brown algae. The little path i made with La Plate sand was almost the same colour as the Aquasoil. So i taped the tank up with black bags, (completely blocking out all and any light) turned off the lights and co2 and went away for the long weekend... 72 hour blackout.
When i came back 3 days later and opened the covers my tank was algae free...

 

@jakkals thanks will try the total blackout. Will put a note on it saying load shedding lol thanks a lot will let you guys know if it helped

 

@jakkals thanks that seemed to have worked. Did a water change and will see if it comes back but so far so good, doesn't look like it's growing anymore.

Fantastic idea but, will it effect any livestock?

 

I didn't have any in the tank so I'm not sure, it normally happens in newly set up tanks.
