I have been struggling to get my tank up to par since moving back to Riversdale in March. A couple of weeks ago I saw my one Cory started to get a nice round belly and I've been on the lookout for eggs.

Last Sunday while cleaning my HOB I saw some eggs on the filter floss I had on the skimmer of the HOB and tried to save them. Only got 1 egg that hatched and it looked a lot like my Rosy Barb fry from last year. I did not notice any breeding behavior from them or white cloud and Red Eye Tetra's so thought it was the Cory's.

Then on Thursday I noticed the Cory's swimming behind the HOB and noticed a batch of eggs. I tried the credit card method to remove them and lost some to the hungry Rosy Barbs. Luckily I got about 30-40 out into a plastic holder.

Yesterday I found out the Cory fry definitely does not look like the Rosy barb fry and I have about 20-30 Cory fry.

Hopefully I can get some of them and the unknown fry to grow out.

Thanks guys. Everyone looks healthy. Just amazed at the size difference between the Rosy Barb( I think) and Cory fry. You can just about see him on the normal picture if you know what to look for.

The cory fry are easy to spot.

Wanted to do a water change in the tupperware "bakkie" and had to build a small gravel vac with a silicon cap. Here's a few macro foto's of the fish. Bit difficult as they are busy bodies and never stays stil.

Things got a bit busy at the end of the year and I have not updated this thread. I moved my fry a bit too early to my big plastic breeder in my tank. My rosy barbs proceeded to suck out all the fry through the vertical slits. Then a week later my female corry jumped out of the tank. She was dry to touch but still alive with half of her fins eaten or torn of when I found her. I put her in a breeder net with some rooibos tea bags. Miraculously she survived and I have a new batch of 1 week old fry. Just 9 this time round as the other fish got to the eggs before I could.

Most of the time my small school of rosy barbs are the culprits of the injuries to my corries, as they will just casually go up to them and nip the fins. They together with the red eye tetra's devour most of my plant leaves. It has gotten better with the new food I feed and there are more cover for the corries now.

Always a lot of learning along the way! Hits and misses. Well done on saving her.

If you suspect you might be breeding them on the regular you could consider a Marina hang on breeder box. It uses a little air pump to circulate water from the main tank but protects the fry from sneaky adults. It hangs on the outside of the tank.

Sorry to hear that you lost the fry.
But at least you managed to save the Corry.

Barbs can be nippy. Sometimes if you increase the size of the group they will squabble among themselves and leave the other fish alone.

Yeah you always learn in this hobby. Every batch is different. Will see how this batch goes but will just try and raise a few. I did look at the Marina breeder and will get one later. Its a bit difficult in the "platteland" to get everything you want/need in this hobby.

My rosy barbs are always in breeding mode and squabbling among each other. Except the one fry that survived from 1.5 years ago who is the big aggressor I think. Could never sex it, but from the attention my 2 males are giving it the last couple of days I think it is a female. The extra attention will hopefully stop her from bullying the corries. That gives me 5 female and 2 male rosy barbs.

I have 2 babies left. This time it was some fungus that got the others. I put a snail in the breeder to remove excess food. The last two has been doing well for the last 2 weeks.20220126_185851.jpg
