    And they will spend a lot of time cleaning an area of the tank (plant leaf, filter pipe etc) in preparation for laying eggs.

    Yes but eggs won't survive. But then u have a possible pair atleast

    You could put some sort of divider in the tank.
    But if you have too many fish there could be water quality issues
