Hi there. I have 2 Moonlight guoramis and a huge Clown Loach. I am willing to swap them for some Neons or apistos. Or anything interesting

 

I have 6 Australian Rainbows (Melanotaenia australis). The juveniles I had is gone, but the adults is still available.

 

Does anyone know who is breeding Apisto McMaster... picked up 6 from a LFS and loove, them would appreciate some advice on breeding

 

Usual Apisto breeding should work fine....

Temp around 26'C. This should give a fairly even mix of males and females from any fry that may result.

pH should be around pH 6 to pH 6.8

Nice planted tank with some Mopani and a few small terricotta plant pots. I always got long but small pots, and cut them in half vertically (this can be done with an angle grinder) and then placed them onto the substrate (fine sand works best as Apistos like to dig, and close up their caves). You can push the pots down so that the entrance is only a little bigger than the female, and she'll do the rest.

You can add Indian Almond leaves or Ketapang leaves to help soften the water a little (not that we need to in Cape Town), and they are believed to have anti fungal properties in them which will help the eggs.

Hey the G...good to be back... let me know if any guys drop out. The macmasteri were from that well known crowd in Medowridge. Sadly I think I took the last, did google the Macmasteri and they look somewhat different but very bright . Put them in the new fluval edge that I bought, so hope they do well there. will post some pics when I get a chance.

They are currently 2cm long, how large do these get ? At what age will they start breeding ?

I'm sorry to say, that they are not Macmasteri. They are Apistogramma Sp. 'Steel Blue'. I was in there a last week, and they were sharing a tank with some Cacatuoide 'Double Reds'. Google them and see if Steel blues look closer to what you have?

These can be rather aggresive, but usually only amongst themselves. Don't be surprised if the most dominant female goes on a killing spree, and kills all the others except the one most dominant Male. At that size though, they should be ok for a while longer?

The females look remarkably like the males, and are really hard to distinguish unless they are in their breeding 'yellow' colour. I hope you managed to actually get a Male AND a female in your group?

The size sounds like they could well be mature enough to breed, although still small... I had a pair, and the male was 4cm, but the female was a tiny 1.5cm! I was astonished at how she pushed out over 30 eggs every two weeks! I'd have never of thought that she could have fitted them all in her body! So, I'm guessing it's likely that you have females who are mature enough to breed, but the males have not yet matured enough? Give them time, and keep an eye out for any tail slapping. Thats a good sign that you may be about to get a pair?

If you can, please put up a pic of each one you got? Its possible that 'our good friends' gave you some Cacatuoide females as well? Most of the staff are clueless when it comes to Apisto's. I got some Trifasciata females from there last week, as I needed more to spread the males aggression, and I asked to catch my own in the end as it was much easier!

Best of luck with them.... See if you can beat my record.... Eggs within two days of arrival!! And they hatched out too! Although only about 8 or so! Next spawn two weeks later was around 30!

Aaaah our good old friends.... keeping up the reputation of being knowledgable ha ha. So clearly my id attempts had failed and you correctly point out that they are not macmasteri and in fact they are also not the steel blues either, they are the Double reds and look awesome... either all good.

I had a long look at them and the females and males are similar but the males show far redder and brighter markings so I am reasonably sure that I have 3 males and 3 females, Im not sure how these will differ in behavior to what you describe above and if the lady will go "glen close" on the rest of the team, hopefully not. I will keep a good eye out on them and see how amorous they get. Will be finding a 'cave' of sorts for them to lay in but want to try and avoid those flowerpots, in the new fluval edge so want to try and keep it looking natural.

Ok, so they are brown with Red/Black blotchy fins then, and not blue! Haha!

They are a totally different kettle of fish.... Literally.... Cacatuoides are one of the easiest and most passive of all the Apisto's! You may have a few little tiffs going on, but generally these are harmless. Again, follow the same rules as before with regards to tank setup and spawning, and you shouldn't have any issues.

What I would do, is keep an eye on the females, and the first ones to colour up yellow (you won't miss just how yellow they get), or set themselves up in the caves, and remove all the other females to your community. Then take the biggest brightest male, and remove all the other males to your community. Leave the one male with the two females, and see what happens? In the meantime if you are lucky, the others will pair off and spawn in the community too!

The females are usually smaller than the males, and have a strong black to their first two rays on their Dorsal. Sometimes you may see traces of colour in their Caudal at the top and bottom. Other than this their fins tend to be browny orangey yellow, with none of the deep colouration of the males fins. Sometimes the odd female will have an excess of colour, and they are the ones you want to try and breed.

The Males will develop tail extensions on the top and bottom of their Caudal, and a few elongated rays on the front of their Dorsal. Also their Pelvic fins will be longer than the females.

Hope that makes sense? I can't think straight at the moment as the kids are literally climbing over my head as I type, and I'm full of manflu!!
