Just wanted to check on something...
I'm getting my new 280lt Boyu tank ready for malawi's. I've been reading through the forum and have discovered that there should be a very high filtration rate in the tank.
There is definitely a high current in the tank coming from the pump but the rate of water coming up through the top filter seems slow (not running as fast as my smaller Boyu).
    Is this normal??

    Good day TracyB1.

You say that there is a high current in the tank but that you are worried about the slow filtration? Hope I understand you correctly.

You don't want the water to run through your filtration too quickly. It will wash away your beneficial bacterial colonies. Your micro media is very important in your filtration. A too strong flow will eliminate what you need in your filtration. I will not worry too much.

If you're feel that the slow filtration is not sufficient you can always add a sponge filter or two in the tank.

Hi Tracy. I do agree with Lappies but if the filter is performing well under the manufacturers indication then there might be a problem. It might be that the filter media is packed to dense and this restricts the flow. You can always test you flow rate. Take the time i takes the outlet do fillup a 1 or 2L jug and work it out from there. If you fill 2L in 25seconds it would be 80ml/sec. That is a flowrate of 288L/h.

Thanks guys. I'm looking at the flow rate before it goes through the filter media. I'll try measure it this weekend and see what I come up with. The pump label says MAX 900L/h but it just looks so slow. There is a hectic current in the tank though :)
It's a standard set-up so it's probably correct. It's just that when people talk about such high flow rates I expect to see Augrabies waterfall ha ha

Tracy. I flowrate of 900l/h will fill a 2 L jug in 8sec. Go test and come back to us. 2L in 8 sec = 250 ml/sec = 15L/min = 900L/hour. That is no Augrabies. lol 900l sounds like a lot but if you break it down it give a different perspective of the expected flow.
