    Hi guys,

sorry if this have been asked before but I need some advise.

    I have a Yuemei aquarium that is 1500 x 600 x 500, would a boyu ef-25 be sufficient for this size aquarium?

I have purchased one today but have not used it yet as I the filter media was left at the store when the filter was taken out to show me.

The Boyu EF-25 is rated at about 750L/h and says it’s suitable for aquariums up to 450L.

I do have the option to using top filtration as well as the tank has a canopy with filter media compartments in the lid. But I’m not sure the flow rate is sufficient.

I am not going for planted plants yet. For reference I have attached pictures of the tank at various stages.

This is a very nice looking tank, I had a similar tank but the sun sun brand. I would say regarding the filtration that is quite less but that also depends on the livestock you have in there. My tank used a 2000lph cannister and a 3500lph overhead filter for the overhead box and it was great. The only issue was the waterfall noise from the top filter which got me really annoyed. I now have a similar sized tank and on it I'm using 2 X 2000lph cannisters and I can see there is a slight difference when compared to the old one. You can however add just a powerhead or wave maker for circulation

Thank you, at the moment I have no live stock in the tank.

I can get another overhead filter that does more circulation if that is advisable to run with the Boyu?

I am not sure what the livestock will be necessarily. But there has been some talk of Neons, maybe some parrots and angels and algae eaters.

But then again, I just need to check on which fish can live together peacefully. :).

I don’t have an issue purchase another over head filter that will turn more water and run it together, or just purchase a bigger canister filter :).

    Thanks for the input.

As a side, is the UV Filter in the canister really beneficial?

Honestly both my cannisters have them and I don't see any benefit even if I forget to turn them off over a week. Maybe it helps with the unseen but I can't say I see visible results from the UV lights.

If you don't have an issue I would say get another cannister and fill that with mainly bio media.

Regarding stock's I would not mix those fish together. Maybe neons and angels but that's also a hit and miss. Parrots are definitely a no if mixing with community fish. Have a look around at some of the members systems , you will get a good idea of fish going together as most members here, if not all stock their tanks correctly

Thanks for the input on the live stock and that.

Going to see if I can return the Boyu for a bigger canister. Maybe a dolphin or even pay in and go for a boyu ef-35. My tank is 450l so that’s the highest end the filter anyway.

or I’ll just see the price if I keep it and get an over head filter. Wouldn’t hurt either way I think to run two filters surely. I mean can you have to much filtration?

You're welcome.. and no there is no such thing as too much filtration. As long as the fish are not getting blown around you'll be fine.

You wanna go planted or non planted? Both have plenty of options and many on here can advise you on this

Non planted at the moment. Not familiar enough to go planted.

but I have a funny feeling this hobby may just explode in the next year.

Hahaha you will be surprised how much a year can change.

Have a look at the threads on my tanks. A few months ago I was thinking of going plants. Now I have more plants than I am available to maintain haha. I'm really excited to see what you put together

Funny was just posting about my tank that is similar, it had the same top filter, that I eventually threw out as it just did not keep up with the tank.

I eventually took it out. Now I run a Fluval FX5 and another large Sunsun canister, I forgot the model, but its the one with the UV.

Although my tank does have quite a bit of a bioload, with 2 Oscar's, 2 large silver dollars, 2 large tin foil barbs, 4 large blood parrots and a huge std pleco, the filtration does well and I am very happy with the results.

The FX5 basically does all the heavy-duty lifting in terms of mechanical filtration and the SunSun canister takes care of the biological filtration. The UV in mine definitely makes a huge difference to aid in water clarity as well as keeping the algea under good control.

I have taken the filter out as it was not working. And decided to go with the canister :) Don't think a filter would keep up to much with the volume in the tank. Unless I run two.

    That's a nice collection of fish. :)
