I have a few (5 out of about 500+) Blue Dream shrimp that have some copper coloured blotches over their bodies.
Anyone have any idea as to what it could be?
A colour morph? Some bacterial infection?

I am sorry I can't necessarily answer your question but I would certainly be interested in this as well, I've had green jades turn yellowish orange on me, and if you look at this chart, blue dreams are from the chocolate lineage as my green jades are from some yellowish orange ones. The Rainbows had a lovely surprise meal today.
I caught any that had even a hint of reddish coppery colouration, and dumped them in the 4ft community tank.
At first I was considering breeding the line, and see whether I could get Bloody Mary from them, but then realised I have already scaled back on the number of tanks, and was just opening myself to setting up at least 4 more tanks.

Did you figure out what caused it? Does it just happen naturally?

Apparently all Blue Dream and Bloody Mary shrimp originate from the Shoko line.
As these were imported shrimp, the overseas breeders probably were going more for quantity than quality, and were not keeping their lines pure.
These shrimp I culled were showing signs of this improper line breeding, and were reverting to either the Shoko line or Bloody Mary colouration.
I want as pure Blue Dreams as I can get, therefore culled the shrimp that showed reddish or coppery colouration.

My Red shrimp are an example of better line breeding.
I started with 10 low grade RCS, and systematically built up the line to where they are today.
Only the best coloured shrimp would be bred, with the others going into a cull tank.
They have bred true to colour for the last 2 years or so, and now I am attempting to improve their colouration.

@Pezulu I'm quite new to the shrimp scene, so by that logic I should be culling a substantial amount of my green jades until I can breed a line that is properly green?

I have had weird colours produced due to line breeding of the Reds I bred.
The colours ranged from good quality pumpkins, chocolate, carbon, green, blue, white and just about anything else, to glass and brown wild colouration.
I threw all the culls in a single 2ft tank that was heavily planted, and they shared the tank with German Blue Rams, Threadfin Rainbows and Kubotai Rasbora.
Enough survived that when I tore the tank down for a guppy breeding project I netted over 2000 shrimp from the tank.
A few were probably predated on, but the majority survived, and they were also breeding.

I have netted about 30 Blue Dreams from the grow-out tank, which is quite a loss, when taking into consideration that the average price for them is about R60 each.
The loss of R1800.00 is minimal however, if I want to breed a pure strain of Blues, as the potential gain of producing a pure strain is significantly higher.

In Taiwan, Japan and Indonesia shrimp have been selectively bred for about 40 years now.
They were introduced to the USA between 2003 and 2008, depending on who you listen to, and finally introduced to South Africa in about 2010.

I started fairly late, getting my first 10 low grade Cherry Shrimp in 2014.
From there I selectively bred them, and added new blood from private breeders as and when I could.

They have been breeding true to colour for a few years now, and although there is always room for improvement, I am satisfied with the progress made to date.
