    Hi All

Okay first off I would like to post that I don't want to make any trouble by posting this but I have a few Q's on the blacklist. I think there will be a couple of other members that have some Q's on this as well.

I like this one particular fish but I googled it and found that it is native to SA and Florida US. So my Q is this, why is it on the BL but is native somewhere in the world as well?

Hope this is clear to everyone I post this with good intentions.

    Regards
    Hein

    Hi Hein,

The idea of BL'ing the native fish is to protect them from being fished out of the local waters. If the loacl water systems have more of the native fish removed, then it can cause imbalances, and also allow invasive species to prospor by reducing the amount of native species competing with it in the local systems.

So I hope that answers your questions? The short of it is its for the conservation of local species.

    Regards
    G!

No, the BL we abide by is the SA one, but even if you imported teh fish, it would still be illegal to keep as it is on the SA BL. It doesn't matter where you get it from, its just the fact that you are in SA, and its on the SA BL. If you lived in Namibia, and it was not on their BL, then you could import it to there, but as it is on the SA list, it cannot be imported here.

Even if you tried, it would be ceased and destroyed by customs.

    Hope that makes it clearer?

    Regards
    G!

Sorry for hijacking your thread, but do we have organisation that breed our local fish and then release them into the rivers and dams, i know that this is a common practise in other countries. ie aus where they keep the local in the loop with what they have and when they will release new breed fish back in to the water.

I think there are programs out there doing this, but as with anything, alot is restrained due to funding. Then there are issues with releasing tank bred fish into 'wild' water systems, and another issue is that in some cases it is pointless to release the native fish into the systems as the invasives that now occupy such systems will just devour them or out compete them for food.

Its going to take a lot of funding and hard work to get the water systems sorted, and unfortunaltely, the money required is being used elsewhere, for much more important budgets, like buying new Beemers and Mercs for the Top dogs! Hehe!

    Cheers
    G!

I also believe that if it is a native species, you could possibly get a permit to keep it?

As far as I know, in order to get permits for local species, you need a valid reason to keep them. I can't see the government issuing permits that will allow regular aquarists to keep local species. Things like aquaculture and research would most likely qualify for a permit.

Seems to be a very hard fish to keep because the juveniles enter freshwater and when get older need salt water
