Over my fish keeping career, Brackish is s setup I have not tried yet.
But it's definately on my "to do" list. Would love a tank with some Monos and Scats.

I once caught some small fish in the Vanderkloof Dam and put them into a small tank, the water turned brackish and the fish lived for a very long time. If I remembered correctly, it was some carp and a baber.

I could not get the water clear and I could hardly see the fish.

It wouldn't turn brackish unless you added some salt to fresh water?

    No salt added.

    Then the water wasn't brackish.
Sounds like it was heavily polluted.

Brackish water is fresh water with varying amounts of salinity - typical of mangroves or estuaries

I also havent tried brackish but would love to one day

Monos are gorgeous and scats can be very cheeky but have tons of personality

Also want to try Dragon Gobies -a face only a mother could love

And also so called Fresh Water Morays, which need brackish long term.
Not sure they can be kept with the others. As they are highly predatory when they get big.

I was actually watching on ytube a largish one eating and it was hilarious

Some Dats can also go brackish at low salinity

I've got a book ;) on Brackish fish by Dr Neale Monks
There is actually quite a large variety of fish that require or tolerate some sort of salanity.

But for me, the 2 fish that I always think of are Monos and Scats.

A brackish puffer tank will be nice.

Or eels, there is one true freshwater moray and the rest are brackish

I've kept many brackish setups in the past. Some of the most fun I've had with my tanks, really, in terms of the types of fish I ended up keeping, as well as the setups that I created. I've had a large brackish community, a brackish moray tank, mudskipper setup, as well as native fishes.

As for real mangroves, I've never seen them for sale. I doubt you could find any that are (legally) for sale, either. The seeds/pods that I found were washed up the nearby beach, likely originating from the mangrove forest on the river south of us. The one species did really well in an aquarium setup, while the other struggled immensely. Either way, not suitable for aquariums in the long term unless you have an open-topped tank and are willing to have a tree in your house.

I feel the best way to recreate mangroves is to find driftwood roots (or at least, looking like roots) - far less maintenance and long-term worries. I've never had luck with other live plants in a brackish tank, although it is possible to maintain some species like Java fern and Vallis in low-salinity systems.

I don't know if I'll do another brackish scape in the near future, but perhaps at some point I'll get back to it.

    Regards,

I don't run a true biotope to say but I ran an "African" and "Asian" tank. The African tank is still there with polyterus, knifefish and synodontis but had to add my paradise fish temporarily due to complicated happenings.

    Themed tanks are pretty fun
