I thought I knew filtration, yet learn everything everyday, I have a 712L frontosa tank, running it with a 180L sump, all media submerged, pre-filer being a 1/4 size of the sump, my question is regarding bio-balls vs Plastic pot scrubbers, I have my bio balls fully submerged in the 2nd chamber right after the mechanical filtration, and it's a fairly good amount also, I learned that they actually run better in wet/dry systems, then The idea poped in my head to rather use pot scrubbers, which will be best? i don't run ceramics or anything else as bio media. Leave the bio balls or replace with scrubbers?

Scrubbies have more surface area, but they tend to clog up, as they catch a lot of floating detritus, which can be both a positive and a negative. They are also not easy to clean.

If your water parameters are good, your filtration works, and you don't need to change your media.

@neltf .. I agree with @Jwh .... the scrubbies are a pain to clean but you also get different types of bio balls
Some have holes in them (if it makes sense) others are just like an almost smooth ball and to me a useless
If you jhave the ones with holes in them, they also give much more surface

After trying different things, we have settled with a part ceramics, some bioballs with the holes and matrix... Its whats worked best for us...

My personal prefrance are ceramic rings as they porous and can house way more healthy bacteria.and when in a jam use the kids army men and Lego. Lol
