hi all:bigsmile::bigsmile::bigsmile: i want to get a nano tank and a betta, i havent bought anything yet. i found a nice tank looks like 8-10 liters im not sure. i want to keep one male in it. that should be okay, right. i want some plants, i was thinking amozon sword, camboba and somthing small/short. i have some silica sand/really fine gravel leftover from my last setup that should be okay. how deep must the substrate be? and how many watts should the light be? also what is the minimum wattage heater i can use? i saw some fishfood in the petstore called siamese fighter food so ill feed him that. was also thinking of some live food now and then what do you reccomend? and i can definityly use some general advice on bettas.

please go for atleast 40 litres, 10 litres is kinda cruel if you dont mind me saying. Just as a comparison its like you being forced to live in your room for the rest of your life. Sorry, for all the gloom and doom just dont like hearing stuff like this.

Amazon swords will grow to large for even a 40 liter tank. As for food I use betta flakes and freeze dried bloodworms. A heater any size from 25-100 watt will be okay depends on wat you can get. I think its great that youre looking at a heater most people dont realise that they are actually tropical fish.

8 liters is plenty. Just haven't seen heaters small enough to fit in there.

Well,Secunda gets pretty cold,Highveld as well,so no heaterin a tank will probably drop the temp to 11-18 deg.

hmm i suppose 10L is ok for a betta at least he can move around a wee bit, mine lives in a 70L tank i had built for him and his new ladies, before that it was a 40L and before that was the 1.2m community. you might consider a 20L they relatively small and he can swim around nicely, i donated mine to a betta at a bar i go to.

20L sounds good too. And your heater will fit in the tank. This is the 1 foot tank.

My one foot is 12 litres. Not 20. Standard off the shelf 1 foot. (12litres give or take for the substrate)

I also got a 25W for my Nano. Small and tidy. works like a bomb. Easily sourced. Most LPS carry them because the biggest seller of tanks is a 1 ft!

I'm really looking for those new 25w undergravel heating pads. I've seen a few being sold on a international forum, so we should be getting them soon.

Oh and, according to fishlore, a 2.5gal tank only needs a 10w heater.

ya, i think 11L is far better than those 340ml peanut butter jars you see them in at the LFS and with a few plants and decorations it would be a nice little home / environment for him. give him some places to explore. heater is a nice touch as well. are you gonna get small filter as well?

The element part of a 25w tronic is pretty small. Maybe 6/7 cm?

Just because they can survive in a small tank doesnt mean they want to...
