    Hi all

I have now actually almost tried everything. But my betta is still struggling to swim.

    Its been 2 months now.
I live in durbanville northern suburbs.

    His tank:
    45 liters all by himself.
    Heater 27 degrees
    Bubbler
And tiny filter - low flow.
Water parameters are good. ( i have been doing regular 50% water changes every 4-5 days.)- hoping it would help him.
Water is aged about 2 days.

Anyway it started about 2 months ago. He would lay on his side and dart up to surface for air. And then sink back down like a rock.

    So i thought swim-bladder disease?

started doing epsom salt bath- i did this only 2 times - don’t want to stress him. And was not sure if it was working cause he would just lay there the full 15 mins.

In between i would do starving days. And a cooked pea.

Anyway so then i tried kanaplex - also. No improvement. And then took a break from treatments and just did water changes. For about a week.

Then dit kanaplex again. Nothing still the same.

Currently i am now just doing the water changes.
So here i am hands in the hair... I really don’t know what else to try.

My betta is very awake and spots me a mile away. Still gets excited when i am near. But he is stuck in the heavy body - not able to swim properly at all. I checked the scales, and honestly i can not say for sure a 100% that it is raised like in dropsy picks. They could be standing up a little....but not sure.

I feel so bad for him. - is there anyway to reverse this?

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Fasting for just one day is not enough. Fast him for 3 days straight and on the 4th day you can feed peas only.
You should start seeing an improvement after this.

What food brand are you feeding him?

On a side note I don't think your frequent water changes are necessary. In my opinion for the size tank that you have you could decrease it to 25% once a week.

Send a picture if possible so we can see if he does have dropsy.

Feel welcome to DM me. I'll give you my whatsapp number and help you out as much as I can. Do have experience with Bettas and swim bladder :)

Unfortunately your fish does have dropsy (fluid retention caused by damaged kidneys)

The thing about dropsy is that it isn't a disease. Its a symptom. Find out the cause is next to impossible.

Treatment can be done but is also very difficult. We don't know whether we need to treat viral or bacterial infection.

Let the fish fast till Friday and then feed the peas. I would recommend soaking the pea in some garlic as this helps to fight infection and strengthens immune systems.

Keep your water clean. Try doing Epsom salt treatment again

Just try your best to treat him and keep him comfy. Usually once dropsy appears it's not long after that...

    The raised scales indicate dropsy.
Unfortunately is difficult to treat. You could try Epsom Salts. But a positive outcome is unlikely.

Bettas are short lived fish - 2 years is about it for them, though in some cases they can live up to 5 years
