I have a young male betta crown tail plakat (about 7 months old) and he don`t want to make a bubble nest. He flares and displays at the female (who seems to like him very much, she is full of breeding bars) When I realse them he`ll flare at her and she`ll flare at him. But he won`t make a bubble nest... When I had other betta males in that very same water they made a HUGE bubble nest. Is he perhaps too young? Should I give him a diet of good foods should I increase or decrease the temp? (its about 24 celcius)
    Thanks

if you have another betta male who builds regular nests, steal that nest and place it with your chosen male. Sometimes this example gives him the idea.Is there something floating somewhere for him to build against? polystyrene etc?

    Thanks, @Nina_W.
I had a half moon male in that tank, he flare and build a bubble nest but the female lost interest. So I took both of them out and replace them with different pairs. The bubble nest the half moon male made was still in the tank. I`ve notice this male stare at it. Today the nest is still there. Don`t know if he added bubbles or not.
YEs I have a piece of bubble wrap in the tank.

If it's still there, it's likely that he's maintaining it. They don't really stay put if no one is working on them, at least, not over night, I think.

Another thing you can try is putting another male Next to the tank, sometimes this triggers them to build a nest.

    Thanks @ Nina_W & @Fishie Mitchie
I will try it... He is happy, flaring and displaying to the female but the only problem is he does not build the nest. Hopefully he will soon..

@HennieRoux I agree some males will only build a bubble nest after the female is released or even during spawning when the male puts the eggs in the nest and you could also place a dry indian almond leave or a rooibos tea bag in the spawning tank it will act as a natural stimulator it has worked for me before.

He male is proberbly not yet ready to spawn give them some time 3 days at most if no spawning has occurred then remove the pair condition them and try again in a week or 2. If the male is very aggressive towards the female then you should place her back into the jar in the breeding tank

Well, she does not stress really. She just give him a flare and then heads off. Perhaps like you said the male is not ready to breed yet... its a shame because I really like him. And he`s not nipping at her... I have not notice torn fins. The female had spawn a number of times before. In fact this male is one of her own fry! I don`t know if that had anything to do with the problem that she`s scared... the male will stress when he see another female and this female will stress when she see another male. But when they are together they quickly get bright colours and flare.
Thanks for all the advise so far

No problem Dude but don't give up hope just yet not all bettas spawn after being released it normally takes a day or so, just give them some time together and if nothings happened after 3 days then remove them and try some other time.
    ... Btw post some pics:bigsmile:

P1160383.jpgthis is the male. WIll post pictures of the female later. She IS a bit torn... but not by this male, other males. I`ve decided to keep her in that little holder till Sunday. If they had not bred by then I`ll split them up and try later again. Also I have a HUGE plakat male, a blue one but almost all the females is scared of him... Then there`s a double tail female who got breeding bars but refuse to breed.... bettas (sigh) But these pair seem to love each other so I hope they will spawn one time or another

The male looks very young, and your tank not clean @ all, if you want to breed your bettas, then ensure you have @ least a clean tank, bottom and sides must be wiped @ least once a week, and if you have a sponge filter ensureit gets rinsed in water you have drained from your tank, ensure once a week wate changes. By the looks of that male I would take a swing in the dark that he is about 3 months old (maybe, educated guess) he will not spawn if he is to young or not ready! Get your water and tank right then worry about spawning, or else this couple will die like the rest of your Bettas!

    Thanks for the advise @HennieRoux
But I bred this male myself. The parents spawn on the 1 Nov 2012. But if you think he is still to small I willl seperate them and try again later.

Remember size plays a big role in the spawning process as you know, just because he is over 4 months old, does not mean he is ready, give him another 4 weeks and feed him well...put some size on the lad.
