I have a nice HMPK black dragon female betta. I tried to breed her with my black copper, purple male round tail. But she did not breed and I tried another female. A few days after I removed her form the male I notice some thing was wrong. She was a little bloated and pale. I thought she had bacterial infection. Soon I discoverd the truth: She had dropsy! I was sure I would lost her. So I removed her and put her in a bowl. I add aquarium salt, epsom salt and medicines. I thought she would die in a day or two. But after a day or two I saw something like a plump of food comming out of her. I don`t know what it was. But after that thing came out of her she start to recoverd quite quickly. She looks much better now. Her colour had returned and she is more active. Her scales are not raised anymore and I could not tell she had dropsy. I hope her wound would heal. It is now almost a week later. I really don`t know why this had happend.

Have you used any medication on the wound so that it does not become affected, keep your water as clean as possible. Make sure that the water is kept constantly warm and also ensure that you clean her container at all times.

Are your also aerating the tank for rich flow of oxygen.

My female betta is recovering quite quickly. How long should I have her in the hospital tank?

I do not think that se had dropsy, rather that she was only consitpated. IMO the epsom salt only made her stomache work and thus the erhm "plump of food" coming out of her.

I agree with @Jimmy here @Rooivlerkie. From what you described it's constipation and the Epsom Salt's like Jimmy said did the trick. Don't feed your betta unless you see "droppings" in their tank/bowl. This way you know the previous food has passed through their digestive system. They eat like pigs and gets constipated very easy. Remember that their tummy's are as big as their eyes and thus small amounts of food is best even if you think it's not and then only feed every other day or so unless your conditioning to breed and then only twice a day live food like BS, Daphnia and Blood worms (be carefull with blood worms though - might have parasite's). Anyhow - glad your female is doing great. For the wound try Tetra General Tonic or else some disolved rock salt in her water would also do the trick with daily 10% water change.

She had raised scales. I don`t know if it was real dropsy. But yesterday I saw some droppings in the tank. I feed her very little only about 1 or 2 granuals a day. I feed all my bettas this amount of food. I lost my first 3 bettas of overfeeding. I also had 3 bettas that had dropsy and both of them died within a week.
But I am gald that she is okay.
