    Hi Everyone,

I put my 2 large pieces of driftwood in the spare bathtub yesterday and filled with the hot tap only. With the previous wood it wasn't an issue with boiling, as they were much smaller.

    My question is this:
Is there any other methods I can use for removing the most tannins apart from boiling or soaking with hot water?
Can I use a chemical for this purpose?

Boiling is not an option here as I don't have a large enough pot to do the job.

    Any help will be appreciated.:help:

    Thanks.

Just be patient :) I threw our big pieces in the swimming pool for a week, then the tub for about 2 weeks. And now it isnt leaching at all.

If you dont mind staining the living dinges out of your spare bath tub,Potasium permangenate does speed up the process... It is an extremely strong oxidiser and will help to leach out tannins from wood... nice big teaspoon full in the water...

It will initially turn the water a dark purple.. as the oxidisation effect takes place over the next 12 to 24 hours, you will notivce the water becoming a sort of milky brownish colour - this means that the oxidisation power of the PP is spent - drain tub and repeat process... 5 to 8 treatments like this goes a LOOOOOONG way in getting rid of most of the tannins... Have used this on Mopani wood in the past with reasonable sucsess... I fullu understand the benifits of tannins to aquariums, but I hate the look... some Seachem purigen in your filter when wood is added to tank after this soaking process will ensure that water will stay crystal clear

You could put it in your bath and then run the hot water only.
It doesn't have to be boiling, hot water will still do the trick.

Thanks @azurekoi, I don't have too much time as I want to start my planted tank in two weeks time. This is why I want to get rid of most of the tannins. The previous time it took me two months with the other piece of mopani. This is why I posted for advice. Will try the Potasium permangenate as I don't mind the stain in the bathtub as it is the outside rooms bathtub and mommy won't know of this....:secruity:
Where do I buy this stuff?

    Thanks.
