Hi im very very new to aquariums, ive got a cichlid
Aquarium and currently running a dolphin f2000 filter
but would like to get something better. Would canister
be a better choice? I was looking at the boyu external
    filter canister efu-45

    Thank you

Personally I prefer a canister filter to other forms of filtration in a 1.2 or 1.5m tank.
They are easy to maintain, almost noiseless, and efficient.
The Boyu EFU-45 seems a bit expensive, and I'm not sure the UV filter is necessary.
If that is your preference however, go for it.

I have a question, if a UV sterilisation light is used. What does it kill? Bacteria? I have also been looking at them and am keen to know

    I like the Fluval range.
And if it was me, would go for the 406. I had the 405 on my 240L tank. Never had problems.

A UV light will reduce the bacteria and also algae (suspended) in the water.
Imo, unless you are having problems, it is not necessary.

Ok thanks, so filters are safe. If the price is right, I would go with the UV one as well then.

    My 2c worth

@howard uv works if potent enough and at an exposure rate that is appropriate for what you want to achieve, they are effetive in controlling algea, bacteria and viruses that are free floating in the water column, ie it won't cue ich, or reduce black beard algea, but they will prevent/control algea or bacterial blooms.
There are calculators and tables on the web that will indicate appropriate strengths and effective exposure rates for the tank size required, Google is your friend. Most uv lights built into canister filters are not very effective, rather get a stand alone unit connected to your filter return.
I only use them on my big tanks (2m+) as a preventative measure

I will go for the eheim classic 2217.
Really good filters and can take a lot of media.

All filters mentioned so far is all great.

Unfortunately My pockets aren't deep enough to afford any of those and I purchased the Dophin C1600 which I have been using for more than 1 year now without any problems.

I agree with @Ortaega, the above mentioned filter are very good but I also have Dophins on my tanks, both the C1600 and the C2400 and they are excellent filters and also take a LOT of media

At the end of the day you need to look at the species you are going to keep, this will give an indication of the bio load on the tank itself.
This will show the need for the materials inside the filter etc.
At the moment I run a dophin c1600 with power head for extra currents.
As long as you have a good surface interaction with oxygen regarding current the tank will be good.
Research the species you want to keep as well to give the best filtration for them.

My biggest tank is a 5 ft. I honestly just run a standard internal filter rated at 1800 liter per hour. And squezed both sponges into one compartment, and cycled media rings in the other. Filter turns the tank over 6 times per hour, had to install a spray bar, as current was to strong for guppies.

But its keeping up. Started with a few guppies and tank is exploding with fry.

Best is to play around and see what works for you.
But this was at the fraction of a cost to what a canister would have been.

Want to redo the 5 ft though.

If your water parameters are good, your filter works - no matter what type, brand, price or media, that's all that should matter
