Hi guys, I've seen some threads on general power backups using batteries and inverters or UPSs.

But in particular I'm looking for a battery backup just for my 24v DC return pump (Jebao DCP3000).

The transformer for the pump is rated at 24v 2A.
On the box it says the pump is 25W (So it probably uses on average just over one amp if my memory of high school physics serves me well).

It doesn't make sense to use a UPS or inverter, those go from battery DC to 240v AC, then back to 24V DC when it hits the pump's transformer (DC adapter).

    I got a quote for this: https://microinstruments.co.za/product/dc-ups-24v
R1840 and I still need to buy batteries. It is rated at 24v 7amps so it is probably more than I need (not sure if it would kill the pump?)

Does anyone have a product they actually use? Something like a Ratel (no 24v option) or a Jebao Coral Box (not available in SA)?

If I have no luck I might just get a new battery for my old 1000va UPS and see how well that works. I thought if Im going to spend money it might as well be an appropriate device.

You can connect the pump directly to a 24 volt battery.

You can buy 12 volt alarm battries and connect 2 in series to give you 24 volts.

This should give you about 3 hrs. 7 amp hour batteries with a 2 amp load.

What you linked will also work but how much extra is the battries? The pump will only draw what it needs from the battries as far as I understand.

Cool, Ill look at those batteries. Also good to understand the run time. The benefit of the device is switch over to batteries when power fails and then recharging them when it comes back.

Takealot has deep cycle 12v 7ah for R240. Plus that controller, looking at R2300ish all in :(

Hmmm, putting 2 new batteries into my old UPS for R450 is probably a good start. Then, if that doesnt work I can start saving for the fancy controller and use the same batteries in the new setup.
I just hope this isnt the UPS that used to beep incessantly.

The need for this battery backup is that when the lights go out the water drains a bit from the tank, my sump fills to the overflow and dutifully overflows down the drain. Then when the lights come back on again, the pump chamber water level goes too low and the pump starts sucking air. My sump design needs tweaking: a larger pump chamber... Perhaps also a non-return valve on the inflow pipe (the one that goes from the pump up to the tank).

I dont want to hijack the thread but would also like some advice please. How and what do I need to run a Dophin C1600 cannister for about 3 hours during loadshedding?

Am sure the other guys can help there but just wanted to say that my tanks handle 2,5h load shedding no problem. Even twice a day.

Does it plug directly into mains or does it have an ac/dc adapter thing that looks like this:

    Or like this:

    upload_2021-2-5_15-9-1.png

If it plugs directly into mains, ie its a 240v AC pump, then a deep cycle battery with (preferably pure sine wave) transformer is best, and a UPS is OK too but not as good.

If it has one of these adapters, then for first prize you check out the voltage and amperage rating on the adapter and get a DC to DC UPS, like this https://www.communica.co.za/products/ratel-8100, that's of course if it is a 12v power supply on the dophin. If it is a 24v then you are in the same boat as me. This Ratel has built in batteries and it replaces the adapter essentially. Also fine, but probably not as good is to use a normal UPS, but remember these aren't designed to run for as long a period of time as our loadshedding... :-(

Perhaps someone who as a DophinC1600 and is running a UPS can let us know how many hours they get (and how many VA the UPS is rated).

Yup - my problem is more to do with keeping water levels in the sump consistent.

Keeping fish and beneficial bacteria alive is probably only a concern for longer outages, or when its very hot or very cold.
Past a certain number of hours you could, I suppose, put your beneficial bacteria filter material into a stocking and into the tank?
Or battery powered air pump on a seasoned sponge filter etc

I guess more than a year late is better than never. This device is still running right now. It keeps my dc pump going for the whole 2.5 hours (on the lowest pump speed setting). However, if there are two load sheddings in one day it sometimes doesn’t make it through the second one. Once in a while it likes to be turned off and on if it has run all the way down.

We sometimes get it 3 times a day. It's very annoying :(
