So, I have scaled down to only one 46cm fish tank, with one black widow, one x-ray, 2 rummy noses and 4 white clouds and one half moon male betta (seperated of coarse) And once again I want to start breeding bettas again. All my last spawns were failures (and I don`t know why) However this time I want to try again and have (at least) one successful spawn. Any tips? I won`t be breeding the half moon. Alhtough he is pretty, I am afraid of loosing him and I think he is quite old. Not in his prime for breeding. I keep him only as a pet, not as breeding stock. I am thinking of buying a young male and female betta to begin with and to condition them for two weeks before spawning them. Any help how to raise the fry? I don`t want to loose them all again. I fed them microworms, changed the water. All is well until about 3 weeks after the spawn. THen they start dying off one after the other. I rarely find the corpses so I assume they were eaten by the other fry. Onlly about 5 fry survive and then after a month or two, they seem to become stunted and don`t grow anymore. Any tips on that? I bred my bettas in 46cm and 60cm tanks. I would really appreciate help as I would love to have at least one successful spawn.
    Regards

    Hi Rooivlerkie,

Diyo only feed Micoworms? My babis are at the 4 week old mark now, been battling white spot with the but otherwise they seem to be growning well.

Fry dying and stunting sounds like either

    1) Genetic problems
    2) Water quality issues and overcrowding

Did you test your water, and were you doing regular, daily water changes? When they are small, fry can very sensitive to water quality issues, more so than adults.

Seems like I'm a couple months late but if you're still breeding and experiencing the same problems...

Water quality could be an issue with the growth of your fry. Fry release a hormone into their water to inhibit the other fry from growing to decrease food competition, so if water changes are not frequent enough this could be the cause of stunted growth? Or else not enough nutrition in their diet. They need to be fed a few times a day for the first few months. Also, its not uncommon to lose most of the fry in the first couple of months so it might not be that you're doing anything wrong.

I do water changes every day on my Betta fry , otherwise they grow at a snails pace.
