    Hi All,

I have just started up a new 500L (see image), currently cycling with a couple of tetras - hoping to go the discus route in the next month or so. New to JHB, so the challenges of hard water and high pH is still part of the education.

Been keeping fish for the past 20 odd years.

    Rich

Welcome to TASA Richard. Nice setup and we look forward on the updates of you progress. Have you considered in investing in a RO unit to soften your water?

    Thanks Everyone!

Still learning about the RO systems - am thinking it is inevitable as 100L per week is just too much to treat chemically (currently using black water extract).

Ouch that will be a small fortune on the long run. I believe RO units aren't that expensive but remember not to add pure RO water to your tank, add a bit of tap water as well. Fish require certain metals and minerals in the tap water.

hey Rich do yourself a major favour get hold of jan at sadiscus he will tell you some amazing things about ph and discus...i was shocked to find out that ph is only critical when breeding discus,,,he has a ph of 7.2 and reckons temp is more important than ph.Considering when the amazon comes down in flood the ph rises to about 8 i reckon he has a valid point..i suppose if you wanna keep your ph at discus requirements its one own choice yeah?but opinions are like bums everyone has his own lol..awesome tank gonna look wicked with some discus...anywho cheers
