How can I remove a really bad smell from my tank without having to remove the fish? It is really horrible  smell coming from the tank. I think it originated form a large snail that died and stayed in the water for a day or two. I have removed the snail and have tried a few water changes but there is not really a difference. I can't remove the fish because it is month old fry and I dont have another tank to house them for now. Any suggestions would really be appreciated!!
Yea do as adviced frm happy with big water change whn siphoning. Can continue for week or 2 with small changes everyday.
Agreed Do a 10% water change daily, if you do deside to siphon just scrape the gravel, try your best not to desturb the gravel to cause graveldisruption. Do this for 1 - 2 weeks and smell if it again. Beware to change too much water with the fry in the tank. Keep us posted.
One or two of those air stones/diffusers with the very small air bubbles may also help to get rid of the smell. Lennard
yeah, try this as they air bubbles burst it release the smell into the air and eventually the smell will be gone
this is the best you can do for the smell. bad smell normally means poor water quality, which could have come about from the snail rotting in the tank, but water changes like the above should correct it.
The smell would be of an organic origin. The quickest way to get rid of it is water changes or using bacteria to eat the organics in the water. SpecialBlend should work great in this application.
Agree with Henk, plus, if you have an ammonia and nitrite test kit and you test your tank water now,you should see a nice ammonia/nitrite spike.Water change and bacteria should sort that out.
