Avoiding Rust

How do you guys avoid the rust on you light fittings. If you buy one of these cheap setups....essentially the light fitting inserts onto the canopy...which is quite flimsy I might add...My Jebo has a covered light fitting... How do you guys approach light fittings when buying a new tank?

rlowe is right but when metal and water are close together there will always be rust. I learnt the hard way this saying. Sometimes it is better to spend the money and buy the expensive light coz when that flimsy cheap light falls in to the tank it will give the fish a shocking time. sad to say.

 

Well my Jebo doesn't have a cover, so I ended up making a condensation plate to sit on the inner rim on the tank.

On the new tank I actually found some submersible 10w fluorescents, which have all the ballast bits outside the tank, and thus I just suckered them onto the two light shelves.

I don't like overpowering the fish with light, so the 10w's are just fine for me.

The best that I've used is the lampholder is either riveted with aluminium, or a brass screw. neither will rust....

I'm in the electrical trade, so the fittings are the first to go, and they get replaced with tubes only in the lid, and the ballast, starter etc mounted outside.. The tubes get held in place with clips.

 

I agree , I pulled all the electronics out my lid which stops the rust but also produces less heat inside the lid
