    Hi,

So i spend the whole day setting up my tank, the canister filter is running and all that's in the tank is the substrate so far.My problem is that i forgot what the norm temp of the heater should be (i think it should be 26Celsius but i'm not sure)

I'm going to let it cycle until the end of May before adding any Fish but i want everything to run perfect until and beyond then.

Nice tank you got there :) All the best. And the filter will clean the water by tomorrow morning you'll see. 25-26 should be good for malawi's

Nope,i don't have too much money on hand so what would you recommend as the minimum amount of fish to add to start the cycle for a 500L tank?

Microbelift is one of the best starters and not that expensive, do a fishless cycle better for the fish than ammonia burns

Can you maybe get some filter media from a running system?
Maybe from another fish keeper near you?
    Or even your lfs?

Throw some fish food into the tank every couple of days. I would recommend using the forum search function to find info on the nitrogen cycle.

In short, the waste your fish produce cause ammonia, you need to cycle the tank to establish sufficient nitrifying bacteria to turn ammonia into nitrites and ultimately nitrates which you will then remove via water changes before it builds up to levels that will effect your fish or their environment.

    Good luck!

    Thanks for the help,

@Reedfish,i don't know any fishkeepers in Sinoville but my lfs def has filter media in their running tanks that they would hand out.How much do i need and can i add it from the start or can i buy and add some when i buy my fish?

@Verndog,I don't have any fishfood on hand atm but if it's cheaper then the other methods then i'll try it.

    Thanks again for the help.

I wouldn't recommend adding fish until the cycle
is over or you may end up with either dead fish or permanently damaged fish. A cycle can take any where from 4 weeks and over. I wouldn't throw any meat into the tank. Rather use fish food, it breaks done much quicker and is allot cheaper.

    Thanks,then i'll use fish food.

I also wanted to ask if there is any kind of moss that can be used in a Malawi tank.i'm planning to make a small bowl shaped cave in the center of the tank thats made of smooth river rocks/pebbles glued together with silicone and then the moss growing on it to cover up the spacing between the rocks.

Random pic pulled from the web on which rocks i'm planning to use.

i hope that gravel dust clears up ,i recon u going to have to drain and do a water change ,most filters wont clear such fine particles, not any time soon i think, did u use a plastic bag on the substrate when u filled the tank? this usually will avoid the dust scenario.but nice tank dude,a friend of mine has a jebo very similar
