As long as you do things correctly (cycle filter etc), it should work out fine.
    Keep us posted.

Here is my new fish in the tank :)

Im struggling to get my tanks temp up, my thermometer says the water is 15 and i hope this doesnt effect my fish. I moved my fish tank to a warmer room and also put a blanket around the tank

    Tank looks great @SlickThickVic

How many litres is the tank and what wattage is your heater?

What size is the heater... or at least what wattage?
Also, maybe try putting the heater a little closer to the filter so there is movement of the water away from the heater.

Make sure the thermometer is working.. Does it feel cold to the hand. I have a general feeling of 25degrees which I can now more or less tell.
Remember also that heat dissipates and rises. Smaller tanks are more difficult to keep cool. Think of getting a cover or even a temporary solution to keep the heat in. Also move that heater into a lower position. It is fully submersible do not stress.. Place it as far down as possible.
I'd personally move that heater to the side glass adjacent the filter and place it at an angle down the glass as deep in as possible. That way you have a wider area of water covered and the movement of the filter to move that warm water around.

Good luck and keep us posted. We'll solve these minor issues in no time.

That 25w heater for a 40L tank maybe cuttong it a bit fine. Id say 50w heater would be better, then the heater doesnt have to work so hard. As was mentioned above try to get the heater horizontal and and as low down as possible.

@SlickThickVic this is a solid point when couple with my cover comment.. That 25W is working overtime to heat the water. Been a bit chilly in JHB this past week so the heat is dissipating before the entire tank it warm and able to maintain the heat. How cold is the room your tank sits in? Try covering it at night to A) save Electricity and B) get that tank up to desired heat.

You'll be surprised at how difficult maintaining a set temperature can be when the room conditions vary greatly. Having said that there are many tips and tricks to keep it cool in summer and warm in winter.

That catfish is going to outgrow your tank fast. WRT to the heater, I usually work on 1 watt per litre of water, otherwise your heater has to work overtime to keep the temperature consistent.

    @SlickThickVic ,

I agree with what has been said, that heater is too small
Rule is 1 Watt per litre

To keep the tank at a consistent temperature try keep a lid over the take to retain evaporation and hold heat. Also try aim the out flow of your sponge filter at the heater so the water has a more even temperature.

I had a look at your pics, and picked up some problems or issues you may have.
The heater you currently have is too small for the size tank you are running.
The general rule of thumb is 1W/L.
A 100W heater costs the same as a 25W heater, and is more efficient at heating the water column.
In the long run it will be a saving, as the 100W heater will not be kicking in as frequently as the smaller heater.

You have moved the tank to a spot where it is getting direct sunlight.
This is going to cause algae growth, and on the piece of driftwood you have in the tank, there are clear signs that algae is already growing.

The Hi Fin Pangasius you have in that tank is going to outgrow that tank quickly, and gets quite large.
It grows to about 1.5 metres in aquariums, and can weigh about 80kg.
In the wild they grow to almost 3 metres in length, and weigh in the region of 300kg.

The plant you had in a pot, and have now planted in the gravel, is unfortunately also blacklisted.
It is either Elodea Canadensa (Canadian Water Weed) or Egeria Densa (Dense Water Weed) both of which are on the Invasice Species Blacklist, as Nemba category 1B.
Identification of either is problematic, as they are often confused with either, and many people have started listing Egeria Densa, Elodea Canadensa as Anacharis.

I would strongly suggest you take both back to the LFS you bought them from, and ask for a refund, or exchange for non-blacklisted plants and animals.
On a tank your size you should look at perhaps housing a school of smaller fish.
Neon Tetras, Guppies, White Cloud Minnows or similar sized fish will do well in your tank.

If you have doubts or are uncertain about something, you're welcome to ask questions here.
Every member here started off not knowing anything, and now some think they know everything.
Do some googling, and research the fish you wish to keep, taking into account their eventual size, and the size of your tank.

Keep us posted, and good luck.
