    howzit all

so please feel free to ask any questions or post your experiences or any info you have on aros and PLEASE post pics of your aro

    so I will start

I have found that arowanas are prone to get a condition called drop eye , so basically if you have to much activity at the bottom of your tank they will keep looking down when then cause drop eye I have put 3 ping pong balls in my tank to help with that by keeping my aro looking at them bob about

My 2 arowana still have drop eye 1 eye each...they say it only happens with arowana that are bred in captivity not the wild caught ones. So it didn't work for me i removed mine.

I have read that drop eye is caused by a combination of poor diet and poor water conditions.

There does not seem any conclusive proof as to what causes drop-eye in arowana with genetics, diet, aquarium lights, impact with tank canopies etc, etc all having been cited as possible reasons why they get it, but i've yet to find/see an article that provides a scientific conclusion for this condition.
It seem fairly prevalent in silver aro's, but less so in asian, Australian or african arowanas.
    Personally I believe its genetics/inbreeding.

I've heard that you can get an arowana that has a certificate? What does this mean

Diet is often stated as a reason, the direct cause of DE being cited as a build-up of fat behind the eye, forcing the eye from its socket? Most aro's with DE have it in one eye only, I find it hard to believe fat build-up is selective in that it concentrates on one eye only?

If there is no conclusive evidence that it is the diet etc, then genetics must a a real option.
Particularly if it is mainly prevelant in Silvers.

Mine was still young...don't think was even a year old.
As far as i know you get the very expensive arowanas come with certs but they cost a few thousand...

I always fed mine high quality arowana food and dried shrimp thats all they wanted in beginning.

Asian Aro's are highly prized as bringers of good luck and good fortune in certain Asian countries. These Aro's are specifically bred to enhance certain characteristics such as shape, colour etc, pretty much as you see with show horses or show cats & dogs.
To ensure that the aro comes from a specific farm and is of a particular strain they get microchipped and a "certificate of authenticity" comes with the fish, these fish can go for US$45000 a pop (probably more) you would want some assurance of authenticity.
You can get them locally, here they go for around R5000 for a second grade specimen
